Will Smith Does Cover of GQ Magazine
For decades now, the 53-year-old rapper turned actor and film producer Will Smith has blessed us with his presence in the entertainment industry. He has given us music, amazing films, and now a deeper look into his life with his upcoming memoir. His very first book will hit bookshelves in November 2021. Smith, one of the biggest movie stars in the world, recently spoke with GQ Magazine. He shared details bout his upcoming projects and what it’s been like upon entering into what he calls his “fuck-it-50’s”.
New Film Under Way
Smith, has been driven by his desire to be the biggest movie star ever. He is currently filming Emancipation. It’s an Apple TV+ project directed by Antoine Fuqua. Smith portrays a slave that flees a plantation in Louisiana after enduring horrendous abuse. The $100 million project was supposed to be filmed in Georgia. However, it was relocated in response to the state’s attempt to pass new voting restrictions. Making the movie hasn’t been the easiest. Smith said that they’ve had to endure things such as the daily battle with terrain, rainstorms, and the swamp with alligators. They’ve also had to partake in rounds of Covid-19 testing after receiving a positive test on the set that actually turned out to be a false positive.
Emancipation Is Not Just A Slavery Movie
As Smith discussed his new film, he revealed that he always avoided making films about slavery. He didn’t want to show black people in that light but instead depict black excellence alongside his white counterparts. He wanted to be a superhero and play roles that would be given to Tom Cruise. Smith explained that Emancipation is not just a slavery movie. It is different. “The film is going to be a David Lean style epic, with the flavor of an action flick. More Apocalypto than 12 Years A Slave.” He added that Emancipation is not just about the dehumanizing violence of slavery but also about perseverance.
The Memoir
Outside of filming, Smith will be releasing his memoir in November 2021. The actor who says that he spent his entire career hiding his true self will finally give the world a more in-depth look into his life. “The idea is, I spent the first half of my life gathering, gathering, gathering, and now the second half of my life is going to be giving it away.” The memoir will reveal new information about the actor’s troubled relationship with his father, him hitting his “fuck-it 50’s, and will even touch on the ups and downs of his relationship with actress/screenwriter/producer/ talk show host Jada Pinkett-Smith.
In July 2021, Smith appeared on his wife’s Red Table Talk Facebook show. The couple opened up and shared some of their most intimate details about their marriage, including his wife’s “entanglement” with R&B singer August Alsina. Watch the episode here. Smith will be taking his memoir on tour in November 2021 and will host a huge global virtual event for those who aren’t able to make it live. Click here for details.
