Too $hort got himself into a controversial situation last week during an interview with Saweetie. He made comments which led viewers to accuse him of colorism. Today, the rapper apologized for the statements, explaining his side of the situation.
“I would like to apologize to anybody that’s offended by my words,” Too $hort said in a video obtained by TMZ. “I am from the Bay Area … and the whole racial thing to me has never been a factor in my circles … I’m not really into the whole hatred of, ‘I hate you because you’re light’ or ‘You’re the best because you’re dark.’
“You can’t have blood in your body that makes you better than someone else,” the rapper concluded. “You can’t be born of better parents or better breeding — there’s no such thing. Real beauty is in every economic class, every race, and you can go find that ugly exactly everywhere too.”
Too $hort & Saweetie’s ‘Colorism’ Controversy
The video of Too $hort’s and Saweetie’s controversial conversation recently resurfaced on the web. “Mixed heritage women have always been my favorite,” Too $hort shares in the video. “I don’t think I’ve ever fallen in love with a woman that wasn’t mixed.” Saweetie appears to laugh in response to that.
Ironically, though the video showed her laughing, Saweetie was the first to take offense to Too $hort’s comments. Eventually, the rapper tweeted to set the record straight. Saweetie shared another piece of the conversation with Too $hort via Twitter, where she claimed he had her blocked. That clip includes Saweetie’s response to his comments: “Black women are beautiful. Period.”
Saweetie has previously provided commentary defending black women. She also shared screenshots from a virtual fan Q&A, where someone asked “Do you think darkskin women can be pretty?” Saweetie responded:
“I was raised by dark skin women, so I find this question insulting. Wts I don’t think they can be pretty. I think that they are pretty.”
