Tory Lanez Laughs at Industry Hypocrisy

Published

on

Tory Lanez had a moment of intense satisfaction followed by a hearty laugh yesterday on Twitter at the hypocrisy in the music industry.

A Bit of Background

Lanez released “Chixtape 5” in 2019. While it was well-received by fans, critics had a lot to say. Lanez’s mixtape went heavy on sampling. According to a source, Lanez sampled a few R&B artists of the 2000s era. The flex was strong, landing at number one on the R&B charts and number two on Billboard 200. However, due to sampling, the artist drew heavy criticism.

Lanez Learns a Valuable Lesson

However, the tables have flipped. What many dragged Lanez about current artists are barely receiving any criticism for. And Lanez finds this hilarious. In Lanez’s words,

“It’s crazy … 6 years ago, n-ggas got mad at me cuz I would SAMPLE all the records that it Was NOT OKAY TO SAMPLE on the CHIXTAPES. Now I look up to a whole Generation of artists doing EXACTLY what I was doin .. chopping old Rnb/Pop samples and updating it to NOW sound.

He has a legitimate point.

Lanez’s Story is Not One of Isolation

It is undeniable that things change at the drop of a dime. Lanez is far from the first artist to be clowned and mocked for doing their thing. T Pain, who gained massive success for his autotunes, also received a lot of kickback for his artistic interpretations. However, that didn’t make his projects less successful or keep others from emulating his style.

Nothing is New

While many have frowned on sampling in some circles, it is far from a new choice artistically. Artists have been sampling for years. In the words of Young Guru,

“In 94 we sample records that were 20 years old from 74′. Please stop critiquing the youth for sampling records that are from 2000’s or even the 90’s let the youth be youth!”

That’s what’s up.

Lanez has every right to feel some way, given the hypocrisy of the situation. But, hey, the industry can be fickle, and the best one can do is continue doing what they do best. But, of course, haters do what they do best hate, so let ’em talk.
