Two men have been indicted by a federal jury for the killing of Jam Master Jay, the pioneering DJ of hip hop group Run- DMC on Monday.

Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell, was fatally shot while working at his recording studio in Jamaica, Queens, New York, on October 30, 2002. Jay was 37 years old.

Practically 18 years later, Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington were charged for the killing of Jam Master Jay. According to the US Attorney for the Eastern District, the men conspired to kill Jay about a drug dispute. According to court filings, Jordan fired the bullet into Jay’s head killing him instantly.

If convicted, Jordan and Washington will be serving up to 20 years to life in prison

Washington, 56, is currently serving a federal prison sentence for a series of robberies. Jordan was taken into custody on Sunday.

“Today we began to answer the question of who killed Jason Mizell and why”, Seth D. DuCharme, US attorney in Brooklyn, said during Monday’s press conference.” This Case is about a murder that for nearly two decades has gone unanswered, DuCharme Said.

Reactions from Run-DMC

Daryl “DMC’ Mcdaniels, member of Run-DMC has broken his silence about the nearly two-decade conclusion to the case.

“Although this latest news opens up a lot of painful memories for all of us who knew and loved Jam Master Jay, I’m relieved to hear that 2 suspects have been arrested and charged with his murder,” said Mcdaniels .”It’s been a difficult 18 years not having him around while knowing that his murderers were not yet indicted for this heinous crime.”

Together, Run-DMC produced hits such as ‘It’s Tricky’, ‘It’s Like that’ and ‘Walk This Way, a collaboration with rock group Aerosmith making them the first rap group to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They also won the lifetime achievement award at the 2016 Grammy Awards.
