November 21 is now a Hip Hop History Month in the United States that celebrates the art form and history of the genre. Thanks to congressman Jamaal Bowman and congresswoman Maxine Waters for cosponsoring resolution 331.
History of Hip-Hop
The Hip Hop genre is a cultural movement that allows artists to express their; social, political, and economic thoughts through their music. Furthermore, August 11 is known as a birth date for Hip Hop in Bronx, New York. DJ Kool Herk is the founder of the genre that we now call Hip Hop. In 1973 he threw a party with his sister in the Bronx.
As a result, August 11 is known as National Hip Hop Celebration Day in the United States, a holiday that honors the creation of rap. Furthermore, November 21, now recognized as Hip-Hop History Month, is a holiday that will educate people on the genre and the artists.
What the Holiday brings
In addition, the Universal Hip Hop Museum started a campaign working toward opening the museum to the public in 2024. The campaign name is “KNOW YA HIP HOP,” it’s shown on their website, social media, billboards, and allHipHop.com, as well as many other places. There are many artists involved in making this campaign and museum come to life, including Nas, Kurtis Blow, Ice T, LL Cool J, with many others also.
Moreover, the museum will use its platform to talk about the history of rap, interview artists, and more. In 2021, congress officials Bowman of New York and Waters of California pushed and cosponsored Resolution 331. They took the action to make November a history month. After a few months, the U.S Senate passed the resolution.
Jamaal Bowman said: “Hip Hop is my life. Hip Hop saved my life. Hip Hop gave me knowledge of self. The celebration of Hip Hop history and the study of it is essential to our democracy, our innovation, our voice, and who we are as human beings.”
