“Jacksonville, Florida, you all said you wanted violence? You’re welcome,” Kamaru Usman said following his rout of fellow welterweight contender, Jorge Masvidal on Saturday night. In stunning fashion, Usman tagged Masvidal across the chin at 1:02 in the second round and sealed a knockout that even Joe Rogan and Co. could not fathom from their announcement table.
This marks the third fight with Usman’s new trainer, Trevor Wittman, showcasing his development at age 33. This also explains why he seemed to have an answer for Masvidal’s attacks and subsequent taunting throughout the match. Usman (19-1) retains his welterweight title and now holds the second-longest win streak in UFC history. He sits at 14-straight wins since 2015, trailing only Anderson Silva (16 straight wins) by two.
Although Masvidal (35-15) hadn’t lost by KO in his eight-year career and the 54 fights leading up to this, at the end of the day it seems that his overconfidence came with a price.
“First time in my career, in front of all my people, my family and my friends,” Masvidal said. “I didn’t fear his power and that’s what happens.”
The number one contender, and favorite by most, to challenge Usman for the title next is Colby Covington.
