Vanessa Bryant’s Emotional Speech Only Adds to the Legacy of Her Late Husband and NBA Great Kobe Bryant
During the long-awaited ceremony for the 2020 class, Kobe joined Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett as inductees into Springfield, MA, and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
“I wish my husband was here to accept this incredible award,” Vanessa Bryant said in her speech. “He and Gigi deserve to be here to witness this.”
Kobe Bryant was killed on January 26 of last year in a freak helicopter crash, along with his daughter, Gianna, and seven others. The tragic date remains one of the most heartbreaking in the world of sports. As Vanessa – riddled with emotion – concluded her tearjerker of a speech, the crowd patiently displayed its respect and gratitude.
“You are not just an MVP,” she said. “You are an all-time great.”
Her words echoed throughout the room while audience members and Michael Jordan himself visibly tried to contain their emotions. Kobe’s posthumous induction comes after a nine-month postponement due to Covid-19 restrictions, making for an unprecedented ceremony. Only the night before, Vanessa and teenage daughter Natalia accepted Kobe’s orange Hall of Fame jacket on his behalf. Natalia wore the jacket in honor of her father before flying home the next morning to attend her senior prom.
Fellow inductees, Garnett and Duncan both acknowledged Kobe in their induction speeches prior to Vanessa Bryant’s endearing speech.
“I can see him now, arms folded, with a huge grin saying, ‘Isn’t this some sh—,” she said. “I love you forever and always, Kobe. Bean. Bryant.”
