Investigators are hard at work determining what led to the tragic events of the Astroworld music fest. According to a source, footage from video surveillance is shedding new light on the causation of the Astroworld Tragedy.
The Epicenter of The Astroworld Tragedy
The ability to pinpoint the epicenter through video is what provides support for the current conclusions. And the video timeline details most of the fatalities, occurred in one location, the south quadrant.
As the Washington Post notes,
“Most of those who died were close to each other in the viewing areas south quadrant.”
The pinpointing of the south quadrant as an epicenter is a significant development. This information permits investigators the ability to zero in on exact factors leading to the catastrophe.
As of now, video footage, witness testimony, and investigative outcomes all point towards overcrowding as a leading premise.
What led to the Overcrowding at Astroworld?
According to reports, an inadequate concert layout was a significant contributor.
As The Washington Post notes,
“experts faulted the layout of the barriers, saying it did not allow concert organizers to cut off the flow of people surging toward the stage.”
So, concertgoers essentially got trapped between metal barriers as an influx of people continued their press towards the stage.

The festival showcased many artists. By design, like many festivals, performers conducted their showcase on different stages. For example, SZA had a slot to perform on a secondary stage before Travis Scott’s performance.
Quite a few of the festival-goers were attending SZA’s performance at a secondary location. When she brought her performance to a close, the crowd began migrating. And Travis Scott, whose performance was on schedule for 9:00 pm, was on the main stage.
A later review of the video surveillance revealed the majority from the SZA’s crowd drifted toward the south quadrant to catch Scott’s set.

According to the experts
“The influx into the already-packed quadrant with its rigid barriers would have compressed people, increased the crowd density, and gave fans inside the section little ability to exit.”

Sadly, the flow became too great for fans to push their way through.
“We were trying to get out, but we just kept getting pushed forward and forward.”
The Science behind Crowd Collapse?
Researchers indicate the area’s restrictiveness and the fans’ proximity was an incident waiting to happen.
Where many of the dead were concentrated, there was as little as 1.85 square feet per person. And according to Carnegie Mellon Researchers, at that density, people are amid a crowd that is at risk of dangerously collapsing in on itself.
Primarily the organization of the event was inadequate. And sadly, with no stop guards in place, the unfolding of events was inevitable.
Additional Factors of the Astroworld Tragedy.
Investigations also reveal that poor oversight, lack of attention, or plain callousness are also contributing factors. A careful review of the video shows concertgoers were in a state of distress long before the escalation. Thus, earlier measures could have lessened the impact.

“Three concertgoers who died appeared unconscious in a pile of other fallen fans in the south quadrant only 16 minutes into the show. The concert continued for nearly another hour.”

After things began to spiral, there was no recourse to help the masses. Concert workers made attempts to lift people over the metal barriers to safety. However, the massive crowd juxtaposed to the number of workers and space made it difficult.
According to The Post, one worker contends,
“People were literally on the floor getting their faces stomped in…we were just trying to pull kids over the barricade.”
