Unconventional Methods of An Artist
A conventional release route is not expected for this release. But this is how Yasiin Bey works. According to a source, Bey’s 2019 project was unveiled in museums. NPR mentions,
“Titled Negus, the latest album by Yasiin Bey, was exclusively presented as a ‘listening installation’ for 10 weeks at the Brooklyn Museum.”
This novel approach allowed fans to experience the album in a different, more immersive way, adding to the artistic nature of his work.
What more can one expect from an artist than to have their creations showcased within a larger creative context? This creative approach was a successful way to give fans a deeper appreciation for his work. This demonstrates the artist’s dedication to pushing the limits of his craft.
Who is Yasiin Bey
Yasiin Bey, born Dante Terell Smith, is a native of New York City. As BK Reader notes, his roots in the city run deep, having grown up in the Roosevelt Houses on Dekalb and Lewis Avenues. It was here that he was deeply involved in hip-hop and acting from a young age, shaping his artistic journey.
The source goes on to note that in 1993 while studying experimental theater at New York University, he created Urban Thermo Dynamics with his siblings D.c.Q. and Ces. Despite being signed to a record label, the group only produced a few releases before disbanding.
When Bey teamed up with fellow artist Talib Kweli to form the successful hip-hop duo Black Star in 1998, he made a significant breakthrough. Their rise to fame was solidified by not one but two hit singles that landed on VH1’s list of the top 100 hip-hop songs. With his mark firmly established in the music industry, Bey shifted his focus to Hollywood.
Once an Artist, Always an Artist
In 2016, he stunned fans by announcing his retirement from the entertainment industry and Hollywood. He declared,
“I’m walking away from the current state of the music recording industry and Hollywood. My final album will be released this year, and then I’ll bid farewell.”
An artist never completely abandons their passion. He returns now, and hip-hop fans appear excited about his comeback. January 25th will be the day the world gets a glimpse of what he and the Alchemist have been creating. The event will occur at Le Trianon in the City of Light.
