In midst of Kanye’s Divorce, it seems like the rapper is continuing to break records.

When Kanye West wore a pair of prototype Nikes during his performance of “Hey Momma” and “Stronger” at the Grammys Awards in 2008. I’m sure West would have never imagined the sneakers selling for 1.8 million in a private sale. Yes, you heard correctly.: The “Grammy Worn” Nike Air Yeezy 1 sold for 1.8 million, announced by Sotheby on Monday.

Brokered in a private sale by Sotheby, this marks the highest recorded price for a sneaker sale and the first pair of sneakers to reach over $1 million.

The Nike Air Yeezy 1 tripled the auction record for a sneaker set in 2020 at Christie’s for $615,000. What possibly sneaker was that price in 2020? Well, it was a pair of ‘85 Jordan 1’s. That the legend himself wore when he shattered the backboard during a pre-season game in Italy.

Designed by West and Mark Smith, the size 12 Nike Shoe is made of soft biker leather. The overlay is marked with a tonal Swoosh. Also, featuring a Yeezy forefoot strap and signature “Y” medallion lace lo in bright pink.

Head of Sotheby’s streetwear and modern collectibles, Brahm Wachter said in a statement, “We are thrilled with the result, which has nearly tripled the highest price on record,” Adding, “The sale speaks volumes of Kanye’s legacy as one of the most influential clothing and sneaker designers of our time, and of the Yeezy franchise he has built which has become an industry titan.”

In brief, 1.8 million is a little over the top for a shoe. But when it comes off the feet of a huge celebrity, I guess it is worth the spending.
