Controversial YouTuber Kevin Samuels has passed away, according to his mother. Rumors of his death circulated on social media Thursday night.
Samuels’ mother, Beverly Samuels-Burch, confirmed her son’s passing but declined to release further details. She said she learned of his death through social media as well.
“That was a terrible thing for social media to put that out. I didn’t even know. I hadn’t even been notified,” Samuels-Burch said on Friday. “All I’m doing is requesting that people pray for us.”
Atlanta PD said officers were called to an apartment on Thursday “regarding a person injured.” By the time the police arrived, first responders were attending to an unresponsive man, later identified as Kevin Samuels.
A woman in the apartment told police that Samuels complained of chest pains and that she attempted to help him, but he fell. The woman then called 911. According to the police report, Samuels was then taken to Piedmont Hospital, where he passed away. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office later said it could not confirm or deny any information.
Who was Kevin Samuels?
Kevin Samuels, who liked to describe himself as an image consultant, shared YouTube videos to more than 1.4 million subscribers. He touched on many topics but was notorious for his views on dating and relationships.
Samuels’ views caused controversy, with many on social media criticizing him for attacking Black women. In a video last month, Samuels labeled unmarried women over the age of 35 as “leftovers.”
“If you have made it to 35 and you are unmarried, you are a leftover woman,” Samuels said in the Youtube video. “You are what is left. Men know that there is something likely wrong with you.”
Samuels also stirred outrage over videos where he rated women’s appearance based on their looks. Many called his advice toxic and misogynistic.
Social media reacts to Samuels’ death
Following the news of Samuels’ death, many social media users were quick to draw attention to his contentious viewpoints.
However, YouTuber Adam22 came to Samuels’ defense. “Kevin Samuels was a good dude who gave a lot of people solid advice. He got smeared for having a backbone and an opinion and he didn’t back down to the mob. Rest in Peace,” he said.
