Machine Gun Kelly (@machinegunkelly) has been breaking barriers these past few months, and he’s done it once again with the highly-anticipated Downfalls High. This pop-punk musical film, written and directed by himself and Mod Sun, is a “first of its kind musical film experience” and goes with his latest album Tickets to My Downfall. The film was also narrated by “Bloody Valentine” singer and blink-182’s drummer, Travis Barker.
What started as a joke between the three after watching Grease 2 soon become something they turned into a reality. He described the film before it’s release as,“It’s essentially 14 music videos we’ve woven in between our narrative of this boy whose name is Phoenix.” Phoenix and other classic high schoolers create a storyline to remind viewers that not all love stories end with happily ever after.
Tik Tok star Chase Hudson plays the lead role of Phoenix, and Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney plays the female lead role of Scarlett. The musical also features a lineup of cameos from features on the album such as Trippie Redd, Iann Dior, and blackbear.
Downfalls High Making History
MGK thinks this project is going to change the format of what and how other artists are going to do with their albums and essentially make albums “cool again”.
“When the f*ck was the last time you really sat down and were like, all right, great. Like here’s multiple artists coming out with multiple albums and I actually care to listen to all of them front to back. I think that this will make people be like, dude, if it’s not like playable from front to back and we can’t, like, essentially write a movie to this sh*t, like you know we need to go back and rework it, rework it, and rework it, because I can listen to, like, certain albums and be like, whoa, dude, that should have a movie like that should”, he added.
