Nike is suing the designers ‘MSCHF’ of the Lil Nas X “Satan Shoe.”
The feud began when Lil Nas X dropped the video for his latest single, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).” This video consists of Lil Nas sliding down stripper poles to hell and lap dancing the devil. Afterward, he announced his Satan Shoes. The shoes design AirMax 97’s, a gold pentacle and a drop of human blood in the soles.
Preceding much social media backlash, the lawsuit is finally filed. Today Nike filed against MSCHF Product Studio Inc for trademark infringement. Nike’s complaint requested the court permanently stop fulfilling orders effective immediately. Unfortunately, the “Swoosh” logo is a Nike original and is trademarked. Nike stated to several media outlets informing their disapproval of the ‘Satan Shoe.’
In the recent complaint, the sportswear company stated,
“MSCHF and its unauthorized Satan Shoes are likely to cause confusion and dilution and create an erroneous association between MSCHF’s products and Nike. In the short time since the announcement of the Satan Shoes, Nike has suffered significant harm to its goodwill, including among consumers who believe that Nike is endorsing satanism.”
It appears that Lil Nas X and MSCHF did not review the ‘First Sale Doctrine’ prior preceeding mass production.
Lil Nas X has not been named in the suit and MSCHF has yet to make a statement. More to follow.
