January 14th turned out to be a bloody experience for Lil Bean and ZayBang gig performers and visitors. They would also not forget this for a long time. Unexpectedly, shots rang out at the Lil Bean and ZayBang concert. And here we are, another day, another tragedy to muse on.

Unfolding of The Tragedy
At 9:29 PM Friday, January 14th, the phone rang off the hook at the Eugene Police Department as reports of gunshots at the WOW concert hall rolled in. Savelle the Native, one performer on the bill, later told the media of the performer’s sheer and utter shock during the incident. They weren’t ready then! In his words,
“We go inside; tryna tell everybody we about to go on stage, then ‘bow bow bow bow bow.’ Gunshots … we go out back, and there’s blood everywhere.

Aftermath of Lil Bean and ZayBang Concert
The Eugene police force responded immediately to the calls. After arrival, the injured were taken by emergency transport to the hospital. Thankfully, the victims are no longer in the woods.
Lil Bean and ZayBang Concert Incident Is A Bad Omen
Sadly, the WOW concert hall incident reflects the normalization of violence. Headlines of violence within the hip-hop community are becoming too commonplace. The tragedies of the latter half of 2021 were enough to keep the community reeling. Without a doubt, our communities are still in recovery. Losing hip-hop artisans is becoming insufferable. The losses of cultural creatives in 2021 were staggering. A source notes,
“At least 20 rappers were fatally shot in 2021; some hometown heroes, others nationally celebrated artists like Young Dolph.”
Yet today, the headlines from Lil Bean and ZayBang concert incident still read of the continual threat permeating the community.
A Sigh of Relief
While today’s headlines are not okay, we breathe a sigh of relief. The news report of zero fatalities. Things could have also turned out differently. According to Savelle,
“We were 15 seconds away from not being good.”
However, the fact they are all alive is celebratory.
Moving Forward from the Lil Bean and ZayBang Concert Incident
Although the sentiment is relief today, the tragic implications are unsettling. It is past time for a change. The hip-hop community cannot continue to sustain these repetitive tragedies.
What The Police Need in the Days Ahead
As of three days ago, the suspect remains at large. While appreciative of the leads, the force is calling for more information. As the spokesperson for the Eugene Police department pled in a recent press release,
“There has been some cooperation, which is greatly appreciated. But having a healthy level of solid tips and cooperation is what is going to help investigators.”
We’re hoping that they will receive the information they seek soon. Someone needs to bring about a resolution to this senseless Lil Bean and ZayBang concert incident. And FM Hip Hop will be here to bring the news as it unfolds.
