Griselda label head Westside Gunn reveals local Buffalo figure Eastside Flip nearly died of a drug overdose this past weekend.
Eastflip Flip is the face of Griselda’s 10 album cover and a Buffalo native. This past weekend (Dec 31) Westside Gunn took to Twitter to give an update on his friend’s condition.
A Close Call
“Flip OD’d on the Block, took to the hospital brought back to life, was released. Then got locked up and already out since last night” Westside explained.
“#LEGEND #EASTSIDEBUFFALOSHIT.”
The New York rapper continued to tweet about the situation, apparently addressing naysayers mocking Flips addiction.
“FLIP is MY homie y’all don’t know him or his situation so all of that why don’t u help him shit don’t u think I try and help that man every single chance I get I’m one of the only ones that help him” he ranted.
Westside proceeded to break down the complications of dealing with someone who suffers from addiction. For him, helping those with dependency issues appears to be familiar territory.
“Y’all must don’t know real addicts be it’s not that easy, I been dealing with addicts my entire life,” he began. “I got flip cleaned up took him 2 Miami for Basel & he got locked up the same day,”
He concluded the set of tweets with a piece of advice for anyone supporting an addict. “u can’t force them know matter how much u get them cleaned they have to want it & 1day inshallah it will click that’s why y’all have to keep supporting him as well.”
Eastside Flip and the City
During an interview with AllHipHop just last November, Westside Gunn spoke on Flip’s role in the record label and the community. “He’s been on a lot of my projects as skits,” Gunn confirmed.
“He’s my guy. Just the neighborhood fiend, a bit of a crackhead, but he’s a cool dude[…] Everybody in my whole city knows Flip.”
In addition to being a hype man for Griselda, Eastside Flip makes his own music and has garnered a small supportive fanbase that wants to see him turn his life around.
As a sentimental way to honor his friend and fellow Buffalo artist, Westside Gunn has dropped a snippet of his upcoming music video ‘Super Kick Party’ early. Of course, the video features Flip, and you can take a look below.
