At the top of the month, Yo Gotti released his newest album CM10: Free Game (Feb. 1). As a promotion for the much-anticipated project, Gotti also held the “Change a Rapper’s Life” contest. The competition, which entailed a spot on Gotti’s album and potentially his record label CMG, could only have one winner. However, it seems the runner-ups have something to look forward to.

Yo Gotti Seeking New Talents To “Change A Rapper’s Life”

Last month, (Jan. 26) Yo Gotti announced the “Change a Rapper’s Life” contest via Twitter. “I wanna put a brand new artist in position, I’m bout to upload Dis sh!t to YouTube and SoundCloud RITE NOW,” Yo Gotti typed then. He also referred to his song ‘Dolla fo Dolla’ playing in the video attached. “Whoever can put dat REAL PRESSURE on here dat I like, IM PUTTING YOU ON #CM10 & #PossiblyDaLabel LETS GO!”

As promised, the ‘Rake It Up’ posted the instrumental to YouTube and Soundcloud. In a matter of weeks, thousands of “Change A Rapper’s Life” contestants then posted their virtual auditions for the winning spot. The #dollafodolla tag now has over 29,000 posts on Instagram and is also still collecting around 100 posts a day on Twitter.

Everyone Gets A Prize

After “Change A Rapper’s Life,” Yo Gotti made another astonishing announcement earlier this week (Feb. 6). He’s giving clearance to every participant of the contest, also allowing them to upload their individual versions of the song without fear of legal repercussions. This gives the up-and-coming rappers the ability to monetize their verses and also spread their name. “EVERY ARTIST DAT PUT A VERSE ON ‘Dolla fo Dolla’ YOU CAN HAVE THE SONG,” he tweeted. “U CAN UPLOAD IT PUT IT ON YOUTUBE/DSP’S (Apple, Spotify, Tidal, etc.) AND U MAKE MONEY OFF IT & USE IT TO GET IN POSITION”

This generous gesture is, though, rather unsurprising from the 40-year-old CEO. He’s made a reputation as a massive supporter of fellow rappers with a passion for making it big. Most recently (Jan. 26), aspiring Louisville rapper EST Gee was signed to CMG records. Gotti also made it official with a $750,000 advance given in front of an audience via Instagram live.

The Contest

Since the start of “Change A Rapper’s Life” with the ‘Dolla fo Dolla’ challenge, Gotti has been posting candidates on his Instagram with captions full of support and acknowledgment. “I wanna pay for ur next college semester,” one caption also reads.

“I wanna pay for u to shoot 3 videos & studio recording time,” Yo Gotti typed under a repost of prospective rapper Temia Stout.

With “Change A Rapper’s Life,” Yo Gotti has also given hundreds of hopefuls a rare chance to break into the music industry. It’s entirely possible we may be seeing one of the rappers under the #dollafodolla tag in the headlines in the near future.
