Charlamagne Tha God recently did an interview where he was asked who he would make amends with Nicki Minaj if given an opportunity.
Straight from tha god’s mouth, came the name Nicki Minaj.
So what put Charlamagne and Nicki at Odds?
Charlamagne and Nikki had a bit of a falling out some years back. Charlemagne made some statements, and her feelings got hurt. According to a source, Nicki was so heated by the comments she essentially cut ties. And in a 2014 interview, the hip hop host of the Breakfast Club kept it a hundred about what went down. According to Charlamagne,
Nicki unfollowed him on Twitter and even called the radio station, threatening not to appear on The Breakfast Club again.
So, there’s no doubt Minaj wasn’t feeling anything the hip-hop personality had to say. Because according to Charlamagne, he and the artists were at one point cool.
“Me and Nicki used to be super; we used to be really cool.”
What did Charlamagne Say to Cause the Rift?
Charlamagne didn’t mince his sentiments about Nicki’s hit single ‘Anaconda.’ He simply was not feeling it. So rather than playing nice, he laid all the cards on the table.
“My exact synopsis on ‘Anaconda’ when it first came out was I’m not really feeling this record.”
But he didn’t only say he wasn’t vibing with the track. He referenced the single as corny. According to the interview he recalls,
“I know she got upset when I said ‘Anaconda’ was corny!”
We are talking about taking it straight with no chaser.
That can be a lot to swallow. And thus began the dissolution of a less than solid relationship.
Let’s Answer a Few Questions.
Why did it take so long for him to apologize?
And why does he want to make amends?
Charlamagne is not precisely apologizing for what he said about Anaconda. Perhaps he feels he has nothing to apologize for, in that sense. How he felt is how he felt.
“It’s not for me. It’s for girls, it’s for kids, it’s for people who like to shake their a**. I said when the video comes out, I will probably appreciate this song more.”
But he is making it known that he feels Nikki is deserving of her props. He has a great deal of respect for what’s she’s done in the hip-hop industry. Candidly he refers to Nicki as a bonafide icon.
In his words,
“I got a lotta respect for Nicki. What Nicki has done is unprecedented. She revitalized female Hip Hop over the past decade.”
Honestly, that says a great deal about how he sees Nicki’s overall artistry and contribution. And it means a lot more than sentiments about a particular track.
And so, when asked the question if given a chance to make amends with whom he would choose, Charlamagne quickly answered Nicki.
Reportedly Minaj hasn’t given a response. But a lot of time has passed since he made those initial comments. And as time passes, we grow, mature, live, and learn. So here is hoping that both get some closure and mend things. After all, the hip-hop culture is due for a couple of wins.
