The Consequences of The Michael Jackson HBO Documentary

HBO recently released a multi-part documentary titled Leaving Neverland. This documentary follows the story of two boys who Michael Jackson befriended and allegedly sexually abused. Almost 10 years after Jackson’s passing, the boys who are now in their 30’s and 40’s, have received the platform to share the stories about their interactions with the superstar.

There have been many mixed reactions following the release of the documentary. Die-hard fans continue to go to bat for Jackson, rejecting any claims that he did wrong by these children. Posters have been seen on buses in London defending the singer. The posters read “Facts don’t lie. People do.” and feature a picture of Jackson with “innocent” written over his mouth.  However, the more popular reaction is to believe the men’s stories in the documentary.  This includes radio stations that still play Jackson’s music to this day. CNN has reported that Canada and New Zealand have completely banned the singer’s music from their radio stations. MediaWorks, the company responsible for many of these stations, said “this decision is a response to audience reaction”. Following in MediaWorks footsteps, The Simpson’s producers have also pulled the episode featuring Michael Jackson.
