Amidst the presence of LeBron James, J Balvin, Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson, and others, Donald Glover, in Childish Gambino mode, revealed one of his most significant faults. An Instagram video promoting season five of The Shop was also published by the “Awaken, My Love!” artist on Thursday (Mar. 3).
During the HBO talk show produced by LeBron James’ athlete empowerment brand UNINTERRUPTED, Gambino discusses how his affinity for pettiness affects his career.
“Did you ever tap into something that is in you that you feel is kind of bad to win?” Childish Gambino asked the group. “Because I struggle with that. I am naturally petty.”
The musician then continued to explain that his 2016 album “Awaken, My Love!” resulted from the petty effort on his part. Gambino wanted to prove an unnamed critic incorrect about his ability to write hit songs.
“Like, extremely petty,” he also said. “‘Awaken, My Love!’ was literally because somebody said, ‘Oh, he can’t make a hit.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, not only will I make a hit, I won’t make a single video for it.'”
Awarded Recognition for “Awaken, My Love!”
In December 2016, Childish Gambino’s “Awaken, My Love!” became his highest-charting album to date. The Billboard 200 debuts at No. 5 and the R&B Albums Chart at No. 1. In addition to his 11-song project, the album includes his multi-platinum, Top 40 single “Redbone.” This single is an instrumental component of Jordan Peele’s successful 2017 directorial debut, Get Out
Furthermore, Donald Gambino was not born to be everyone’s cultural hero. Therefore “Awaken, My Love!” will also not penetrate every heart. He was bound to alienate himself from his peers by forgoing his rebel-without-a-cause junior year of rap.
This spring, UNINTERRUPTED’s Sports Emmy Award-winning series The Shop presented by Grey Goose will return for its fifth season on Mar. 4 at 9:00 a.m. PT on UNINTERRUPTED’s YouTube channel.
