The City of Atlanta Endures Another Weekend Replete with Violent Shootings

It was another violent weekend in Atlanta as four people were shot in a parking lot adjacent to the Trap Music Museum early Sunday morning. A little before 4 a.m. several witnesses reported hearing gunshots near the museum. Three men, discovered by Atlanta PD then taken to a nearby hospital, had suffered gunshot wounds. Not long after, an injured woman arrived at the same hospital bringing the victim total to four. According to reports, the suspect was driving a black Dodge Charger.

The shooting came only hours after a similar shooting left three injured at a pool party in Lindbergh. Monday saw four more fatal shootings all within hours of each other, bringing Atlanta’s 2021 homicides to 52.

This nationwide trend in gun violence has been staggering, to say the least, and it’s not just exclusive to Atlanta. Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said in a statement on Monday that “Atlantans deserve and expect a safe community.” Also stating that an “Anti-Violence Advisory Committee will begin work this week to help improve public safety throughout [the] city.”

These events only add to countless others that have plagued the nation for at least the last year and a half. Atlanta police have attributed growing cases of gun violence to poor individual judgment, “Profound carelessness and a lack of regard for human life.” From here, to say that the expectation of a more audible outcry for gun control and reform would be a gross understatement.
