Sean “Diddy” Combs announces creation of brand new R&B label after entering his “love” era
Sean Combs defined the 90’s hip-hop era with his “Bad Boy Records” recording label. Now, at 51 years old, the rapper and producer told Vanity Fair in their September issue that he would start an all R&B label for artists only.
The announcement came shortly after he legally changed his middle name to “Love” and entered into his “love” phase, as he called it on Instagram. Alongside the name change, he announced a new R&B album, Off the Grid, scheduled to come out September 24.
“Yeah, [an] all R&B label, because I feel like R&B was abandoned and it’s a part of our African American culture,” he told the magazine. “And I’m not signing any artists. Because if you know better, you do better.”
“Bad Boy Records” houses greats like The Notorious BIG, Faith Evans, Fabulous, and many more
Critics have pointed out the label’s poor treatment of their artists in the past. However,Diddy “Love” Combs says he holds different plans for this venture. The A&R extraordinaire announced the agency would have 50-50 partnerships and pure transparency.
“We don’t own hip-hop right now. We have a chance to—and I’m going to make sure that—we own R&B.”
The announcement of a brand new label and upcoming album completely contrasted his thoughts of retiring back in October 2019 when he appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone alongside DJ Khaled.
What changed? After the loss of the mother of his kids, model Kim Porter, Diddy says his life shifted.
“I had to start to deal with it when I lost Kim. ’Cause I was like, man, you had it. I’m not saying I would do any of it differently. God willing—I would have had more time,” he shared with Vanity Fair. “[Now] I am the happiest I’ve ever been in life, I laugh the most, I smile the most, I breathe the most. I look at my life as [if] I got a second chance. I’m on my second mountain.”
