Los Angeles R&B singer-songwriter and rapper Kenyon Dixon continues to build his name. From appearing on Spotify’s Vol 1: The Michelle Obama Playlist alongside singer-songwriter Alex Isley, to touring with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Nick Jonas, and Kelly Rowland, Dixon is on his way up. However, don’t think it’s all overnight, either. The soulster has been honing his craft for the past few years, giving us plenty of treats along the way.
This year, we were treated to the aptly named Expectations, Dixon’s sophomore project. It featured laid-back soul-bombs like “Sky’s the Limit” and “What I Like”, with the absolute cruiser “Hard Way”. On the other hand, “You Hate to See It” (feat. Alex Cole) gave a dark and timely take on the everyday racial violence, in a microcosm.
Now, Dixon comes back with his first single in six months, “Morning After”.
Good Day for a “Morning After”
No need to delve into the nitty-gritty of the lyricism here. Indeed, with a title like that, Dixon gives no doubts as he croons and dives from one sensual line to the next. He lets us know “what the mornings after for” straightaway, with the music spacing us out and his intimate lyrics keeping things close.
The chorus does not disappoint: “You know who you’re dealin’ with.” Kicking it off, Dixon goes high and shows off his falsetto skills, harmonizing over the heavy bass. Catchy, sultry, and slow, it simmers into the second verse.
Accented by heavy, churning guitars, the second verse is yet another dose of relaxed excitement. The outro, with a bare-bones, proper guitar solo up against Dixon’s high-flying falsettos, is a duel of heights. In short, “The Morning After” is not to be missed.
In addition to putting out hits, Dixon will be on the move this fall, touring with Ledisi as his special guest.
