Listen: Jay Hollywood – “Out Of State”

Jay Hollywood is an artist who makes relatable music for the millennial masses. No matter the subject at hand, a listener is bound to say they’ve experienced the same thing. Likewise, his music takes on many forms yet is pleasing to the ears. Jay’s musical styling can be somber or upbeat in certain moments, depending on what track one decides to play. Nevertheless, he says that listeners will always get a mix of emotions through his sound.

“I’m pretty laid back and chill. I think people can gain a lot of emotions from my music on that,” he adds.

Following his project’s release, Thee Quarantine Pack, Jay Hollywood collaborated with Black-owned streetwear brand Bandit Studios for the line’s upcoming collection. You can watch the promotional video here.

Likewise, the emcee dropped a track titled “Out Of State” to assist the newest collaboration.

“Being a Bandit is being comfortable with your authentic style and self” Hollywood said. “Out of State’s sound matched perfectly with the cozy vibe that both Jachuku and I are known for.”

Out of State” is reminiscent of the golden boom-bap era. Over the jazzy arrangements and subtle bassline, Jay Hollywood lets listeners in, reflecting on his past, mental health, the come up, and his current relationship with God, his wife-to-be, and family. Without the assistance of a hook, the DMV native spits right off the bat,

My therapist never picking up the phone when there’s a crisis/I feel better with my vices/You said you was the plug, then tell me why I’m finding better prices.”

As the song continues, Jay Hollywood admits to finding the light at the end of the tunnel but still says he’s precautious of who he trusts. Moreover, the rapper speaks on reaching for the stars and inspiring friends in the process.

“I prove my doubters wrong and give my friends inspiration/It doesn’t matter how long, just know I’m staying patient/I’m up a few commas, but I lost a couple associates,” he delivers.

Afterward, Jay Hollywood encourages individuals to never give up on their dreams because “you know you make it when these doors keep opening.”

He also adds that a lot has changed for him over time because of his hard work and dedication. The musician is now seeing opportunities coming left and right.

Deeper into “Out of State,” the I Just Need A Light star lays out introspective bars that center on his relationship with both the love of his life and family. Before closing his verse off, he tells those who are listening that, in a way, music is ultimately his confidant.
