French Montana is trending, but not for his music. This comes after the popular Netflix show Squid Games prompted its participants to name five French Montana songs without features. This request was difficult for the participants.
In response, Montana tweeted a list of songs that answered the question. He continued with an array of “they got amnesia” tweets to those seemingly downplaying his contributions today’s rap game.

THEY GOT AMNESIA LIKE I DIDN’T GIVE THEM CHINX DRUGZ LIL DURK AND HARRY FRAUD ….
Talks of Lil Durk signing with French Montana’s Coke Boys took over media in 2013. Days after releasing his long-awaited debut Excuse My French, Montana promptly, set out to sign the then solo artist, Lil Durk.
In a sit-down with XXL magazine(2013), Durk was asked about his relationship with French Montana. He responded, “That’s my homie, he’s like a big brother to me. He talks to me every day, I call him every day and talk about everything music-wise.” It was clear that he and Montana were in the process of penning the deal attaching him to Montana’s label.
At the time the signing would happen, Durk has 3 mixtapes that had the Chicago native a concrete fan base. With his street rap and street lifestyle, it was clear he has a solid following. Hence, the confusion after Montana’s Twitter rant.
In 2013, Durk signed with Def Jam causing speculations of what caused the deal to fall through with Coke Boys. Fans would not get a clear answer until 2019.
Kindling after the “fallout”
In 2019, Durk gave fans a bit of insight into his fallout with Montana. He shared a snippet of his song Take Drugs.
“When I fell out with French Montana that sh*t did me damage. I learned the rules of a contract but I was planning on singing. He picked me up when Def Jam didn’t, he turned me diamond. Now I’m the voice of the streets, perfect timing,”
Montana proved he was expressly unbothered by the verse saying, “Brothers 4life let’s finish what we started !!” Given that this comment followed the death of New York rapper Chinx, this common woe bonded the two. Montana and Chinx had collaborated on several tracks dating back to 2012.

Durk explained in an interview with VladTV(2018), that he didn’t sign with Montana because he was “young and dumb.” He shared he was unable to discern the people in his ear telling him not to do it at the time. Durk noted he would’ve signed the deal if he knew what he knows now. This interview would also answer the inquires of his split with Def Jam.
After his five year with Def Jam, Durk announced he was going independent. He also shared with Billboard, “I’ve been with Def Jam Records for five years and they gave me my first recording contract so for that I’m forever grateful,” Durk says. “But I’m a different artist than I was five years ago, and the time is right for a change.
Should we expect a collaboration? No matter Montana’s claims, Durk fans show their loyalty to their favorite rapper.
