As it is well known, the “Friday” film franchise introduced several memorable characters. These include Smokey (played by Chris Tucker), Pops (played by the late John Witherspoon), and also Deebo (played by the late Tiny Lister Jr.). Even the more minor roles made an indelible impression. This film was a significant success that attracted millions of viewers.

Anthony’ A.J.’ Johnson, who played the neighborhood crackhead Ezal in the original 1995 production, had a lasting influence on audience members. Sadly, like Witherspoon and Lister, he will not appear in a fourth “Friday” film if one is in the works.

Johnson’s widow, Lexis Jones Mason, was left to bear the burden of funeral expenses. Her frustration led her to address his “so-called” fans regarding their lack of support during his lifetime. Thankfully, rapper Offset of the Migos group supported Mason and contributed to the funeral arrangements.

Last September, the actor from B.A.P.S. passed away at 55, and an official cause of death has been confirmed. A Fox News report claims that the actor/comedian died from “chronic ethanol abuse.” In common terms, it means that he drank himself to death. As Lexis saw it, people need to understand the dangers of intoxication. She intends to educate teenagers at her church regarding the potential consequences of substance abuse.

Furthermore, a medical examiner noted that his death was natural. Toxicology analysis detected no alcohol or commonly abused drugs. Although he had COVID-19 recently, the coroner’s office found no evidence of pneumonia at the time of his death.

Celebrities Paying Their Respect

Ice Cube, the creator of “Friday” and the film’s co-star, paid his respects to Anthony Johnson via Instagram on September 20, 2021, among many other celebrities.

“Sad to wake up to the news about AJ Johnson passing away. Naturally funny dude who was straight outta Compton at the same time. Sorry I couldn’t bring your character Ezal back to the big screen in Last Friday…”

Condolences go out to the Johnson family. FMHipHop sends you all nothing but love through this difficult time. Despite Anthony’s absence from our physical presence, his memories will live on forever in our hearts.
