Amid a global pandemic and lockdown, G Herbo is still grinding and making power moves as he decided he wanted to take his talents to Republic Records.
SVP of talent relations, Damion Presson stated, “I happened to see Herb quite a bit on Instagram. I need to explore what this is and why I keep seeing him,’” Presson says. “He’s the culture.”
He decided he wanted to recruit the Chicago rapper to the label. Presson worked as a marketing director for Reebok, creating relationships with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Future, Cardi B and Travis Scott. He has reached out to Machine Entertainment Group less than a year ago with the hopes of creating a partnership with the Republic and Herbo.
“… They have a very unique way of looking at the business and how they interact and deal with artists.”said Presson. [They give] artists the autonomy to really be them and be true to their art.”
One of the things that made G Herbo want to sign with Republic Records was the label’s readiness to invest in the rapper’s mental health and hometown.
Herb views the programs for Chicago kids, and his mental health work, as part of his larger purpose. “I want to be known as an artist that shows other artists, or just people in general, how to create [their] own legacy, and [their] own destiny when it comes to what [their] purpose is,”
