The N.W.A. rapper, Ice Cube, speaks out on Hotboxin With Mike Tyson about remaining hopeful in regaining ownership of the “Friday” franchise. Currently, Warner Brothers secure the rights to popular films.
Ice Cube tells Tyson he is not interested in buying what is rightfully his.
“They need to give it to me, and they gon’ make money. I’m not about to pay for my own stuff; that’s stupid … They need to do the right thing, get it to us, let us turn it into more money, and make the fans happy … We can do a lot with it.”
Speaking with a TMZ Reporter, Ice Cube is asked if there would be any way to regain ownership under a different name. Alas, Warner Brothers not only has the right to the title but as well as the characters.
Furthermore, Ice Cube has vowed and made it clear he is pushing to regain control of the franchise. But even he is unwilling to take this battle with the studios to court.
Next Sequel in the Making
Ice Cube confirmed during a 2017 late-night interview that he was working on a fourth film in the series. The title is “Last Friday,” and there was also a constant delay on when the filming was to begin.
The film has yet to materialize, even after five-plus years.
At the Rock The Bells festival, Cube explained his presentation to the studio about the two scripts for the “Last Friday.” Unfortunately, both scripts were rejected.
“Fridays” also featured John Witherspoon, as Willie Jones, and Tommy Lister Jr, as Deboo. Although, this did impact the original vision for the last part of the sequel.
Appointing his focus on regaining the “Friday” franchise, Ice Cube hopes to avoid legal action. He’d rather be more willing and focused on convincing Warner Brothers that they are wrong.
