Tione Jayden Merritt (born April 30, 2001), better known as Lil Tjay, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter born and raised in the Bronx, New York City. His musical career began in 2017, with popular singles F.N, Brothers, as well as his collaboration with Polo G on Pop Out. This collab, which peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, made him a household name. In 2019, his debut studio album, True 2 Myself, peaked at #5 on the US Billboard 200.
Earlier this year, the New York rapper dropped his EP, State of Emergency, which was heavily focused on Drill music. The seven-song EP included the track, Zoo York, which features two of Drill’s biggest names, Fivio Foreign and the late Pop Smoke. “Drill” is a popular subgenre of Trap that originated in the South Side of Chicago, but the New York scene managed to bring it to its mainstream success. Zoo York peaked at #65 on Billboard’s the Hot 100.
Moreover, Tjay also appeared on Pop Smoke’s posthumous album, Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon, on the track Mood Swings. The record sees Tjay reuniting with the Brooklyn rapper for a slow-moving track in which they both take turns referencing their experiences with women and the problems that come along with fame and their expensive lifestyles. After becoming a trend on TikTok, the song reached #17 on the Hot 100.
In August 2020, Lil Tjat was featued on XXL‘s 2020 Freshman Class.
