There are plans to relaunch LimeWire, the nostalgic music service. CNET reports that the former peer-to-peer file-sharing platform will revive as music, art, and other entertainment content marketplace. The announcement comes less than a year after Austrian brothers Paul and Julian Zehetmayr acquired the intellectual property rights to the platform. They intend to develop a new platform for connecting artists and fans.
How Long Has LimeWire Been In Existence?
For the first time in May 2000, the marketplace came on the scene to offer users a tool to search, share, and download free entertainment content. US District Court Judge Kimba Wood shut down the company’s platform in 2010 for violating copyright laws.
According to LimeWire co-CEO Julian Zehetmayr, LimeWire is suitable for the upcoming NFT marketplace.
“It’s a very inconic name. Even if you look on Twitter today, there’s hundreds of people still being nostaligc about the name. Everybody connects it with music and we’re launching intially a very music-focused marketplace, so the brand was really the perfect fit for that with its legacy.”
Platform Offers Users Some Benefits
A press release reports that LimeWire GmbH users can buy and trade music assets. These include pre-release music, exclusive live versions, digital merchandise, and more. In addition, pricing will be in U.S. dollars instead of cryptographic currencies. Similarly, users will be able to purchase tokens with a wide variety of payment methods.
In May, LimeWire GmbH plans to announce the launch of its marketplace. However, the company’s official website allows users to join its waitlist to get early access to the NFT marketplace.
The memories I have associated with LimeWire are endless. As users could download music illegally on the platform, it is understandable why it was removed from the internet. As many people continued to use the platform until it was closed, it is evident that the users did not mind utilizing its services since it was free. A free offer can make it difficult to avoid taking advantage of it. Nonetheless, avoiding engaging in illegal activity at all costs is always advisable.
