Master P, born Percy Miller, was featured in TV One’s UNCENSORED series on Sunday (Mar 20). The hour-long documentary explored Master P’s childhood. It also talks about his journey from the NBA to record store owner to platinum-selling rapper and business guru.
The Perspective On Life At A Young Age
Master P begins the documentary with a powerful message for entrepreneurs: “Know your value and your worth.” This message resonates with him to this day. He also shared how his grandparents planted those messages in his head, which gave him the confidence to follow his dreams.
However, Master P almost took a different route that would have led him away from greatness. Growing up in the Calliope Projects of New Orleans, the pressure to join a gang or do other dangerous things was overwhelming. Even at a young age, he knew he wanted something different in life.
“Watching so many young people around me die.” Master P explained. “I start realizing that I don’t want this to be me. I want to be able to have a life.”
An Alarming Rate of Killings Amongst Young Rappers
Percy said it perfectly. There’s an increasing rate of rappers dying from drug overdoses and gun violence. In 2021, the number of Hip-Hop artists’ violent deaths reached two dozen. The obituaries include well-known names, such as Young Dolph or Drakeo The Ruler. Not long after walking out of jail, Big Cino, a young Miami rapper, lost his life to a gunshot. He was only 20 years old.
“Think about it,” Master P said. “It’s because of the drugs and people not being held accountable. We don’t have the right leadership or the right older people around us to tell us that we wrong because we just see the money.”
Master P On Nipsey Hussle
Master P also mentioned the late Nipsey Hussle. Apparently, Percy was surprised to discover that Nipsey did not begin selling albums until after his death. Often, these targeted attacks stem from jealousy. Therefore, many OGs of the culture dislike people using social media to flaunt money and possessions.
Master P’s Success
Master P has demonstrated a commitment to his work. There are no limits to what he can achieve.Uncle P’s food products, Rap Snacks, Master Crunch Cereal, No Limit Enterprises, Make Em Say Ughh energy drinks, you name it. However, time is of the essence.
In closing, Master P made some valid points. Artists often become obsessed with money when they receive substantial amounts of it. In reality, not everyone is fortunate enough to have those in their lives who can guide and instruct them in right and wrong behavior.
