Megan Thee Stallion and Dua Lipa dropped their collab “Sweetest Pie” on Mar 11 to mostly positive feedback. However, Megan and Dua Lipa also received criticism and accusations of “devil worship” because of the creepy images in the video.
Megan took to the Twitters-sphere to clear things up on “Sweetest Pie,” explaining that she intentionally wanted to scare her audience. She lightheartedly explained that she has always been a horror fan.
I see that the #SweetestPie video scared some people or creeped them out a lil bit… lol MISSION ACCOMPLISHED 😂 how many times do I have to say i love horror films/ aesthetics
The video shows two men who have fallen into a darker version of “Alice in Wonderland,” where Dua Lipa and Meg are the sexy yet bizarro versions of themselves. At one point, Dua transforms into a nightmare-inducing spider woman. Meg’s facial features shift from one horrifying image to another throughout the video.
Later in the video, they’re being burned at stake by a group of men they seduced before. Meg furthermore explained, “the symbolism of the video was how when men come for me, I eat they ass up every time.”
She continued, “Even when y’all go on y’all’s witch hunts attacking women for whatever reasons y’all make up, we still rise from the ashes stronger than ever.”
Megan’s History With Horror
In 2019, she created and starred in “Hottieween,” directed by fellow musician Teyana Taylor. In 2020, Meg sat down with James Corden on The Late Late Show to discuss her love for the genre.
“Ever since I was young, if I wasn’t rapping, I was scaring the heck out of myself,” she explained. “I love scary movies.”
Meg continued, citing “The Evil Dead” as her favorite.
Satanic Panic In The Modern Music Industry
Since the inception of popular secular music, a sector of the American public found itself worried about “the children” being corrupted by unholy imagery.
Fast-forward to the early 2010s, a new wave of panic emerged via YouTube. Dozens of videos dedicated to scrutinizing every frame of Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé music videos became a trend, and it hasn’t stopped.
A few years ago, Lil Nas X’s morals were called into question. The release of his “Montero” video shows him seducing, killing, and finally dethroning Satan.
We’ve hardly seen the last of this sort of critique. Most of the reception is positive, however. As for Megan dipping her toe in horror, this definitely isn’t the last we’ve seen of her.
