When it comes to celebrities and the lifestyles they represent themselves to have, don’t believe everything you see. Actress and singer Naturi Naughton plays a member of a ’90s rap group on ABC’s new musical drama series Queens, and it turns out she has some acting experience owing to her days in the pop group 3LW. Naughton admitted she could relate to her Queens character in an interview with The Breakfast Club on Tuesday (Oct. 19), revealing that she and her fellow 3LW members Adrienne Haughton and Kiely Williams appeared on MTV Cribs in 2001 to show off a house that didn’t even belong to them.
“There are moments when I’m in [a Queens] scene, like, ‘Yo, this really happened to me,’” Naughton said. “I lived it. I was doing a fake Cribs. … MTV did the Cribs and back when 3LW was hot, we had to pretend. But I didn’t have a car, I didn’t have a house, I didn’t have any of those things. But we did MTV Cribs.”
Naturi Naughton Spills the Tea on 3LW’s MTV Cribs Episode
The three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom Malibu property was 3,000 square feet. Keily Williams, a group member, begins the classic episode by detailing how the group bought the house and how all three ladies were living there with their road manager. The trio then proceeded to show off their favorite aspects of the house, including their bedrooms. They were all devoid of any truly personal touches such as décor and portraits in hindsight. Naughton explained that the house had to be tidy by 7 a.m. the next day before being returned to the owner. With little apparent regret, the “Power” actress claimed that it demonstrated how “false we [celebrities] have to be to create this image.”
From 1999 to 2002, Naturi Naughton was a member of 3LW. She claimed that she was kicked out of the group and that she had fights with her peers, including fried chicken thrown at her. Naughton also did some solo work, although she was best known for her work as an actress. She now appears as Tasha St. Patrick on Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost and as Jill “Da Thrill” on Queens.
