The recent tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School has devastated the nation, and Netflix isn’t ignoring it.
Netflix exercising empathy
Fans of the hit Netflix show Stranger Things can expect a message card preceding episode one of this new season. “We filmed this season of ‘Stranger Things’ a year ago. But given the recent tragic shooting at a school in Texas, viewers may find the opening scene of episode 1 distressing,” the warning reads. “We are deeply saddened by this unspeakable violence, and our hearts go out to every family mourning a loved one.”
In addition to the advisory warning, Netflix also provided notes including: “Warning: Contains graphic violence involving children” and “disturbing images.” This is presumably due to the violence against children that was displayed during the horrific Texas shooting this week. The forewarned scene contains no explosives or gunfire, however, it’s safe to say that Netflix clearly wanted to cover their bases in a sensitive time like this.
An all too common crime
Season four of Stranger Things just premiered this past week (May 27). The audience returns to Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, and, Lucas as they continue to fight the supernatural. The scene that garnered the warning featured Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown, as well as many other children soaked in blood. Clearly, this imagery is extremely hard to swallow in a social climate like this. Particularly for a show like Stranger Things that focuses so heavily on kids, it was a priority for Netflix to make its stance known.
On Mar 24, an 18-year-old gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. This criminal took the lives of nineteen students and two adults. There are many issues impacting the country but firstly, this community has been rocked and more than ever need support. Be sure to keep the loved ones of those lost in mind.
