Disney Plus is preparing for a new Star Wars show. In the first few seconds of the trailer, it shows somebody holding an unmodified AK-47 in the woods. Twitter is now dunking on the show.
Coming on September 21, Star Wars Andor is another prequel series. It is about the beginning of the rebellion against the empire, set five years before Rogue One. The aggravating gun shows up six seconds into the trailer for the show. It is being carried by an unnamed rebel played by Leonardo Taiwo.
This is not the first time that a gun that shoots bullets has appeared in Star Wars. Slugthrowers have been in the series for a long time now. However, they are generally talked about as a thing of the past. Not a weapon that generally sees active use anymore, now that there are laser weapons everywhere.
The History of Guns in Star Wars
While guns are nothing new to Star Wars, there were always modifications done to them to make them look more sci-fi. The guns were always based on World War 1 and 2 weapons with modified bits to make the rebels look like underdogs. The AK-47 did not see action until the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, long after WW2.
This is not the first time that a barely modified gun has shown up in Star Wars. That honor goes to the DLT-19 (based on the MG34) and the T-21 (Lewis Gun). These two guns have been around since the very beginning. However, this is the first time that they used a barely modified gun that is still in active service.
The reason why people are upset is that the AK-47 is one of the most recognizable guns in the world. It is also seen as potentially problematic, since several of the recent mass shootings, such as the one in Buffalo, was done with guns similar to the AK-47.
