Playboi Carti’s Narcissist was assumed by fans to be an album until the release Tuesday, Sept. 14 revealed a new line of merchandise.
His racing-inspired online store included a bomber jacket, hoodie, long sleeve t-shirt, ski mask, and motorcycle gloves. The most outrageous item of all: a $5,000 black motorcycle helmet.
One observant fan pointed out that the aforementioned helmet closely resembled one from a Chinese retailer. The fan tweeted, “Carti really said let’s do a $29 Chinese motorcycle helmet with a flat logo photoshopped on top for $5k fuck them kids.” The same was said of his $40 ski mask that could be purchased for $0.45 on the Chinese retail website Alibaba.
After such negative feedback, Playboi Carti claimed in a screenshot posted to Twitter, “The website is hacked. The folder was posted live. Never approved any clothing/ etc.” Since then, the items have since been pulled off his website.
It remains unknown as to whether fans who bought items from the Narcissist collection will receive refunds. Either way, Carti’s fans hope for a resolution for the merchandise mix-up before his 43-city arena tour begins in Nashville, Tennessee on Oct. 14.
