Pusha T’s most recent album, “It’s Almost Dry”, features the song “Neck and Wrist,” a track with a verse from hip-hop legend Jay-Z. This marked the pair’s first collab since 2016’s “Drug Dealer’s Anonymous.” In an interview with SiriusXM’s Swaggy Sie, Pusha T praised Jay-Z. “Hov, to me…he’s the best rapper, like, just period,” said Pusha.
Though Pusha showed humility by highlighting Jay’s talents, he gets plenty of praise for his skill as well. Both rappers cemented their reputations in hip-hop history. In 2018, Complex hailed Pusha T as the greatest rapper alive. At the Billboard Awards, the Virginia Beach rapper said it was a great accomplishment. In a 2019 interview, the rapper acknowledged his own lyrical prowess. “Regardless of what it is, I just don’t think that any artist measured up to their true selves like I did, lyrically. Because that’s what rap is about.”
How The Collaboration Came To Be
He continued the interview, talking about the process of making it. The track, produced by Pharrell Williams, came together rather easily. Pusha sent Jay his parts so he could add to it. However, this time around, Jay’s reaction was a little different.
I’ll basically just write the verse, lay the hook down, I do everything and just send it to him with a space open…He’ll hit back, and this particular time he was like, ‘Man, what you want me to say to this man? You going crazy!’ And I was like, ‘Man, just, you know, turn it up.
The two managed to use their collective talents to finish the track. And because they’ve worked together before, they’ve developed an understanding. “I only send records to him when I feel like there’s more needed to the record and there’s nothing else I can really say to it,” said Pusha. He further explained that Jay’s a seasoned rapper and because of this, he adds a lot to the tracks he raps on. “Where he’s made it in his career and in his life, he can always add an uptick to the record. I can’t say what he says.” It takes a great rapper to know a great rapper. It’s no wonder Pusha T considers Jay one of the best rappers of all time.
