R. Kelly’s legal team is trying to postpone his current trial date, according to recent reports.
R. Kelly is on the docket to stand trial in Brooklyn on racketeering charges. But his law team is trying hard to get the date pushed back. His team argues that having him stand before a judge now would be unfair and violate his sixth amendment rights.
“Robert is anxious to have his day in court; however, not at the expense of his Sixth Amendment rights,”
R. Kelly is in a bit of a sticky situation.
According to reports, R. Kelly is currently under quarantine. And under different circumstances, there would be no need for a postponement. But Kelly’s law team is simply unprepared. R. Kelly’s legal team is new. Reportedly, the current lawyers did not join his team until June 21st, And so, they have not even seen Kelly. Therefore, they are claiming a loss of valuable and essential prep time.
R. Kelly’s issues are no secret.
The claims against Kelly have long been publicized and to the chagrin of many fans. Although Kelly’s talent is otherworldly, his scandals cast a dark shadow over any acclaim he has achieved.
In 2019 Kelly was arrested in Chicago, where Kelly was held until recently. A little over a month ago, Robert underwent transfer to a Brooklyn facility. But, his current facility requires inmates to undergo quarantine upon arrival in line with current protocols.
Kelly’s trial date has already been pushed back once
Robert was to appear in court in April, according to a source. That date was pushed back due to COVID-related issues. And
Kelly also is due to stand trial on September 13th in Chicago on separate charges. But the start date of his second trial is dependent upon his New York proceedings, and this poses a problem as a prominent publication notes,
“The New York date could create a clash. It is expected to last six weeks, and if it does not begin on schedule, it would likely delay the start of the Chicago trial.
Kelly’s law team is still awaiting a decision.
R. Kelly’s lawyer has received no response on their request yet. But, his odds are not favorable especially given that Kelly is to stand two trials. And the date of one is dependent on the date of the other. However, we agree that every person deserves a fair trial. So here is hoping that Kelly gets the trial he deserves and that justice is served.
