Slim Thug can be slow on the uptake. It was not until the 2022 BET Awards for him to learn that the song is actually talking about him.
Thug met Lupe Fiasco, who made the song during the BET Awards. He talked about it during his interview with HipHopDX.
“It was crazy to hear that it was about me, inspired by me. It was amazing. It was a dope moment in Hip-Hop for me. He shot the video in Houston and I pulled up. So it was a real dope experience, man.”
“Hip Hop Saved My Life” is a song from 2007. It is from the album, “Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool”. The music video was released on MTV in 2008. Afterward, he was interviewed about the song. That was when he revealed that the song was partially based on Slim Thug’s life.
The song is about an underground rapper with several problems at home that suddenly exploded in popularity. He then uses that money to take care of his family and child.
Slim Thug vs “Hip Hop Saved My Life”
Not much is actually known about Slim Thug’s personal life. We know that when he was 17, he did freestyle raps at high school parties. His career started in the ’90s when he joined Swisha House for 2 years. He left them on good terms because he thought he would make more money being independent. A couple of years after that, he signed on with the Neptunes to make his first album, “Already Platinum”. However, according to Pharrell, he was already a millionaire by then.
There are a couple of key differences between the underground rapper and Slim Thug. The rapper has a child and a baby momma. However, Slim Thug was single at the moment that this part of his life was based. The rapper became successful off of a single, while Slim Thug did so off of mix tapes. Other than that, they are both the same story.
They are both stories of men getting their families out of the ghetto through hip hop and becoming rich and successful. Slim Thug is from the neighborhood of North Houston, which is one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Houston.
