Erica Mena Calls Spice Racial Slur: The Duo Receives Backlash For Heated Exchange

Spice and Erica Mena’s viral exchange is taking the internet by storm. Things went way too far, resulting in a physical altercation between the pair. Fans are slamming both women for their “low” comments on a recent episode of “Love & Hip Hop ATL.” The franchise’s vet Erica Mena calls Spice a “blue monkey” in a heated exchange. The Jamaican singer had a few words for Mena leading up to the bombshell moment.

Erica’s Dangerous Clapback To The Dancehall Queen

Safaree’s ex is known for her clapbacks and ready-to-fight attitude, while the dancehall queen is also a woman who is known to speak her mind. But I don’t think anyone would have thought the pair would hit so low.

Spice said that Mena’s oldest son doesn’t like his own mother. As a result, the MTV star flipped the table and called Grace Hamilton, known as Spice, a “blue monkey.” This shocking moment had Erica catching major heat on social media. Fans of the show are calling for her to be fired.

What Happened Between The Former Friends?

Many acknowledge this is racism and completely uncalled for. The origins of this argument started with Mena’s divorce from Safaree. Shekinah tried to calm the situation but got caught in the crosshairs of the argument. Erica unexpectedly flipped the table in response to the “So Mi Like It” singer’s comment about Mena’s son. The “Love & Hip Hop” vet continued to shout at the singer, saying, “You don’t know about my son!… That b****h should have died!” This horrifying comment was based off of Spice’s surgery scare. Therefore, the Jamaican native hit lower with the remark, “Your son hates you!”

“Love & Hip-Hop” Veteran’s Controversial Past

This is apparently not the first time the TV personality threw out that racial slur at a Black person. Mena allegedly had an issue in the past with some club promoters. She reportedly spazzed, calling them Black monkeys after a mix-up with a scheduled appearance. Staff members accused the star of making racist statements, such as “I don’t usually do business with these Black monkeys.”

Big Boi On Artistry In ATL And Its Contribution To Hip Hop

Today prolific down south rap icon Big Boi shared a little about artistry from his native state and its overall contribution to Hip-hop. He makes an irrefutable point.

The Forming of Outkast

Big Boi is the second counterpart of the ultra-successful fresh and clean rap duo Outkast. In 1992, two of the most creative artists to rise from Atlanta, Georgia, came together to combine their unique talents. A year later, they were signed to Laface Records. By 1994, the entire world was rocking with the duo from ATL. And no one could get enough. Their initial album, “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik,” was an apt representation of the down south flavor, and just like elevators, they kept rising. That album went certified platinum, selling over a million units and winning the 1995 Source Award for Best New Rap of the Year.

Big Boi and Andre 3,000 Dish Southern Hospitality

Andre 3000 and Big Boi had something special. Their eclectic style and impressive lyrical cadence couldn’t be duplicated. And they killed the game. Their subsequent album “ATliens,” which featured hit singles “Elevators” and “Rosa Parks,” was so well-received in 1999 that it was nominated for a Grammy.

“ATliens” was followed by “Stankonia,” which included hit songs “So Fresh, So Clean” and “Ms. Jackson.”

This time they took home two Grammys for their work. And it was well-earned, given that “Stankonia” went quadruple platinum. Impressively, their fourth album “Speakerboxx/The Love Below,” was just as successful as the first three releases. It won three Grammys and went certified diamond. After their fourth success, it was no denying that the masses loved the way they moved.

So, with such record success, if anyone is qualified to speak on artistry in Atlanta, it’s Big Boi.

Big Boi on Atlanta and Hip Hop

Big Boi attributes his love for hip-hop to Run DMC. According to Big Boi in his interview with Hip Hop Made, a drive with his father with the radio-pumping Run DMC served as the spark that lit his creative fire. And when speaking of how the overall artistry that stems from his proving grounds has impacted Hip-hop, he contends it boils down to diversity. In his interview, he named a list of artists who have sprung from the rich soil of Atlanta. As a point of reference, he points out the diverse styles between artists such as Killer Mike and T.I. In the words of the artist,

“A range of different artists hail from Atlanta like Killer Mike and T.I. and it’s those artists like so many others who help Atlanta ,”[keep] it fresh and new. And it’s always been evolving.”

Such is a point wherein no one will deny.

Outkast: First Class

Undoubtedly Atlanta has been resource rich when it has come to hip-hop artists who have broadened the creative scope of lyricism. While Big Boi gives vibrant examples, no one exemplifies his argument more than he and his former collaborator, Andre 3000. What they did for Southern lyricists and hip-hop is remarkable and immeasurable. As Crave the Sound notes,

“Outkast was able to shift the game of what we understood to be Hip-Hop and elevated Southern Hip-Hop to mainstream status.”

For that we salute them.

A Melting Pot

When it comes to hip-hop, representation stems from the four corners of the Earth. And the collective can be best defined as a melting pot of diversification in style and creativity. Undoubtedly, each and every contribution has been essential to the propulsion of the culture and fifty-years of sustainability as an art form. And, with hope, as time passes, the richness that has defined the immersive culture will only continue to expand as more artists come from every part of the world with their own unique flow in style and verse.

Gunna To Release First Project Since Release From Jail

Gunna is dropping his first album since his release from prison after getting a plea deal this past December. He pleaded guilty to a racketeering conspiracy charge.

Title, Release Date & Cover Art

His newest project will be called “A Gift & A Curse.” It will drop on Friday, June 16 at midnight on all streaming platforms; including Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon Music. The surprise announcement came on Wednesday on his 30th birthday. We don’t know what the track list looks like or if special guests will appear. However, the Southern rapper showed us the album art which is a painted portrait of him with a skull and flowers on his head.

“Bread & Butter” Lyrics Address Snitch Allegations

The YSL’s new album comes after he released a new single “bread & butter.” The “Pushin P” rapper has kept his cards close to his chest since his release from jail. In this new record, the Georgia native gives us a glimpse at his journey and he combatted the snitching allegations. Gunna clarifies he never gave a statement and the DA did some sneaky sh** that he fell for, but he added “because this time I be prepared for it.” His lawyer spoke out and did confirm that “Gunna did not snitch” to strike plea deal. The rapper allegedly said nothing and is not cooperating. Plus, the plea can’t be used in court against any other defendant.

Rappers And Fans Call Gunna a “Snitch”

Sergio Giavanni Kitchens, also known as Gunna, has had problems following him out of prison as some has marked him as a snitch. Many believe Kitchens did this to get out of doing a lot of prison time. He was even reportedly chased out of an ATL mall while being called a “rat” and a “snitch.” The crowd that followed him around the mall seemed to get a little aggressive, but luckily nothing happened. His fellow rappers were questioning the plea deal situation as well. Boosie called the YSL rapper a “rat.”

The rapper received a time-served, suspended sentence.

T.I. Gets Into Argument With Lauren Knight

Grammy-winning rapper T.I. got into it on Monday night at an open mic. At Our Bar in Atlanta, Georgia, a video surfaced of T.I. and the event’s host, Lauren Knight, going back and forth.

In the “One Knight Only” open mic series, Knight mentions the sexual assault allegations against the rapper and his wife, Tiny. T.I. denies what Knight is saying and adds that the case was thrown out.

T.I. v. Lauren Knight

The next day, the comedian also posted her reaction to T.I. on Instagram. She started by saying T.I. was heckling her during her set while she joked about relationships and marriage. Once he suggested that she take her wig off, she had had enough. Knight brought up the sexual assault case. She made it known that she could say whatever she wanted because this was her event.

“If I want to make jokes about something, I’ll make jokes about something. You’re not going to tell me to shut the fuck up in my shit. This is my shit. Let’s be very clear”.

Brothers Reunite

T.I. attempted to engage with the comedian more, but his mic was cut off. Surprisingly, he eventually got on stage and hugged Knight at the end.

As Tip ignites a new feud, he recently put out an old one. At J.Cole’s Dreamville Festival this past weekend, the legendary DJ Drama’s set included Jeezy, Lil Wayne, and T.I. The latter two hitting the same stage may come as a surprise as they have not interacted in years.

In 2016, T.I. also did not like the comments Tunechi had to say about the Black Lives Matter group. But on Sunday, T.I. surprised Weezy by walking on stage during his set, and the duo performed “Swagga Like Us.” They ended the performance with a hug as Wayne called T.I. his real brother.

Hopefully, T.I. and Lauren Knight will reconcile more quickly than he and Wayne did.

“Love Renaissance” Takes Matters Into Their Own Hands- Watch Cypher

Spotify and Atlanta-based label Love Renaissance team up for the second RapCaviar x Spotify Singles release.

Artists 6LACK, Westside Boogie, OMB Bloodbath, BRS Kash, and NoonieVsEverybody came together to perform an original freestyle cypher (Side A). And a  new track “Just Say That” (Side B). Rather than your typical cypher, the artists took turns sharing their bars in a bank theme where they played different roles.

OMB Bloodbath kicked off the cypher standing on top of a desk, rapping aggressive rhymes definitely set the tone for the entire visual and sound.

Up next was Cleveland’s NoonieVsEverybody, who spit a calm but fiery introduction!

Then came Atlanta’s hot new artist BRS Kash (Throat Baby’s) took off and delivered a few memorable, quick-paced bars.

Followed up by Compton’s Westside Boogie who went in and used his harsh and raspy flow which leans into what makes him a unique MC.

Grammy-nominated singer/rapper 6LACK ended up closing out the cypher.

“I like rapping with LVRN altogether, I loved the bank outfits, and the direction on set, plus the steak and potatoes on set was fire. If the song a hit, they need to just say that,” said OMB Bloodbath.

Check out the unique Love Renaissance cypher below…

#FMTrends Big Boi: – Boomiverse | @BigBoi

After his Big Grams EP collaboration with Phantogram, Outkast ATLien Big Boi aka Sir Lucious Leftfoot returns as he releases his third studio album, Boomiverse, which serves as a follow up from his 2012 sophomore Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors.

Boomiverse features a bevy of all-star guests including appearances from Sleepy Brown, Jeezy, Gucci Mane, Janelle Monáe, Run The Jewels’ Killer Mike, who is a featured lyricist on Big Boi’s single “Kill Jill”, Adam Levine, who lends his vocals for “Mic Jack”.

The album is a musical gumbo of hip hop, rap and pop, made in signature Big Boi ATL fashion and it is heard in singles like “Freakonomics” and “All Night”, where it sounds like a rare classic find from one of his prior albums. At the same token, you can also hear how his style has evolved in the tunes, “Chocolate” and “Made Men”.

Usually with music, I can tell if a track is a hit or miss within the first 20 seconds. Boomiverse is definitely a home run. If you are a Big Boi fan, this is a must have for your playlist.

Now all I need in my life is one more Outkast album so I can leave the Earth peacefully.

Boomiverse is out now on Epic Records and is available now for purchase on iTunes and stream on Spotify.
