SZA’s “SOS” Sophomore Album: Album Review

SZA’s long-awaited sophomore album “SOS” showed us that she was not coming to play. Her debut album “CTRL” was released five years ago and helped her become the fan’s darling.

Now, the St. Louis native gave us a melancholy R&B and Pop layered melody throughout her debut album, but a certain confidence echoes throughout the project this time. SZA is still herself, but with a twist… SZA 2.0, who amplifies her sexuality and inner gangster.

SZA’s Exuding Confidence

The singer exuded assertiveness on “CTRL” with songs like “The Weekend” and “Love Galore.” But in this 23-track project, she splashes with songs such as “SOS” and “Kill Bill.”

The title track’s lyrics lay out SZA’s carefree vibe as she rap-sings, “So classic, that a** so fat, it look natural, it’s not.” This was the same girl singing “I get so lonely I forget what I’m worth” in her 2017 song “Drew Barrymore.”

The second song, “Kill Bill,” gives us SZA’s sincere feelings about seeing an ex with “some other broad” and knowing they’re happy, but she still might kill her ex even though she knows it is a bad idea. Solána Imani Rowe gave the girlies some more ammo with her no apologies, no regrets vibes on “Seek & Destroy,” “Low,” and “Love Language.” Female Drake and Travis Scott personas sprinkled throughout “Blind,” “Used (feat. Don Toliver),” “Conceited,” and, of course, “Open Arms (feat. Travis Scott).”

Too Long?

“SOS” is slightly lengthy. Even though I am the SZA stan, she did lose me a little in the middle with tunes. Ironically, those were “Snooze,” “Gone Girl,” “Notice Me,” and “Ghost in the Machine (feat. Phoebe Bridgers).”

The songs seemed like tracks that could have gone on a deluxe album. Although, I did enjoy how SZA played around with different characters as she embraced her inner rapper and inner rocker on “Smoking on my Ex Pack” and “F2F.”

SZA’s shy and quirky side on “CTRL” was clearly heard on “Nobody Gets Me,” “Special,” and “Too Late.” “Far” and “Forgiveness (feat. Ol’ Dirty Bastard)” were nice combinations of SZA in the past meeting SZA in the present. It embraced the sound of the two to make hidden gems.

Rowe also added well-known hit singles “Shirt,” I Hate U,” and “Good Days.”

Grade

Overall, the album was an A- for me; I enjoyed it in the first few listens. Over time, it will become another classic because of SZA’s unique melody’s impact on the industry.

SZA Will Make Acting Debut In New Film ‘Tuna Melt’

SZA‘s first ever film appearance will feature her playing the lead love interest in a new movie titled “Tuna Melt.” Also appearing in the movie are the famous Chloe Cherry (from the HBO hit series Euphoria) and Eddie Huang. Eddie Huang is the main character and SZA’s love interest, and Eddie will be writing and directing the film. Previously, SZA herself appeared in television shows such as season 4 of Issa Rae’s hit series “Insecure.” Are you excited to watch SZA act in her first movie role? Originally, she announced the news about her getting the role towards the end of last year on Instagram:

Current Status Of Her New Music Rollout

While many fans are excited about this new endeavor for the famous singer, there are still questions about when her new album will be released. SZA and her label Top Dawg Entertainment haven’t always been able to keep quiet about the rollout and the time spent perfecting the product. However, it’s still slated to be released this year and she’s dropped a bunch of singles during the album hiatus. In the meantime, SZA and TDE did release a deluxe version of her classic R&B album “CTRL” earlier this year. This was done in celebration of the album’s 5th anniversary and features a handful of tracks that didn’t make the original release.

SZA Fans Will Be Fine This Year

I do not doubt that we’ll all be listening to a new album from SZA by the end of 2022. While some of their strategies may be tedious for fans, TDE still has a solid track record and has been more active in the past year. With that said, we can at least enjoy and support SZA’s other endeavors until that day arrives. She’s been working hard to solidly establish herself, her brand, and her legacy. SZA Debates Dropping More Old Music After “Ctrl” Deluxe

SZA blessed her fans with the official release of the deluxe version of her album “Ctrl,” also featuring unreleased music. The famous singer took to Twitter last night (June 9th) & hinted at releasing more older songs on her Soundcloud page.

“What isn’t on deluxe maybe on SoundCloud as well tomorrow? Deciding. Spring cleaning old thoughts” were SZA’s exact words in her exciting tweet. Her label Top Dawg Entertainment doesn’t usually release older throwaways/leftovers from the artists on their roster.

However, with SZA now their most prominent premier artist, she probably has the most flexibility. Take a look at her tweets from last night below:

The Deluxe Version Of “Ctrl” Is Available Now

Whether we get more unreleased music from SZA tomorrow, there are still 7 new records for us to enjoy. SZA & TDE released this deluxe edition to celebrate the classic R&B album’s 5th anniversary. As already mentioned, 7 songs have been added, including new versions of tracks & previously leaked material.

The song “Percolator” is one that fans have been begging & waiting years for. Luckily, neither that track nor the new versions of songs like “2AM” or “Love Galore” are disappointing. The best part about this is that all the music is originally from the time of “Ctrl’s” recording.

Are You Ready For New Music?

While songs from the “Ctrl” deluxe are new for many people, we are still awaiting more fresh material from SZA. It’s been 5 years since she’s released an album & the anticipation grows more every day. Hopefully, we get her follow-up album soon, but there’s no pressure on her to rush perfection. Will you listen to her next official sophomore album release slated to drop this year?

SZA Expresses Frustrations With Social Media & Online Trolls

SZA expresses that she is tired of online trolls that find themselves troubling stars on social media daily. Yesterday, May 4th, the R&B singer ranted about the issue across a few of her social media platforms & deleted her Tik Tok account. “I swear to God if I didn’t accidentally fall in love w music.. I would NEVER EVER COME OUTSIDE,” SZA tweeted as a response to annoying “fans”. She also took the moment to express the intent by her last smash single I Hate U that got released last year. In her own words, “When I said I BE SO SICK OF U NIGGAS YALL CONTRADICTING . I was talking to everyone. Not men . For the record . I hate u was a universal emotion. Take care .”

What Prompted SZA’s Concerning Messages?

Initially, fans brought up a time SZA said she wouldn’t be attending any shows/events until her new album was completed. After she attended the 2022 Met Gala this week, it was clear that her message wasn’t supposed to be taken as literally as some took it. SZA is strong for standing up for herself & her mental health despite fans eagerly waiting for her first album in almost 5 years. “And please know when I drop anything it’s not for y’all. It’s to free my *****ing self,” she shared along with her expressing that the internet is “demonic” on her Instagram:

Her New Album Coming Soon

At least we know that we’ll at least have her new album by the time Summer comes around hopefully. The ball is already getting rolled with her new collaboration with Crocs, as well as this year’s Grammy win for her song with Doja Cat. Again, it’s been almost five years since her last album, CTRL, was released & is now a modern R&B classic. Read more of FM Hip-Hop’s featured articles today.
