Spotify Presents Up-And-Coming Rapper, Doechii As The Latest RADAR US Artist

One of Spotify’s most remarkable contributions is providing artists with the tools they need to achieve their career goals. On Oct. 13, Spotify launched the latest installment of its RADAR US campaign featuring emerging rapper and current headline maker, Doechii.

Emerging Rapper Doechii Exhibits Versatility In Her Music

According to the “Persuasive” rapper, her sound is “alternative.” However, her unique ability to create songs that cross over genres makes her stand out. An individual’s versatility opens the door for a broader audience to gain an interest in their craft. As a Tampa native with this unique talent, she has placed herself on an upward trajectory to stardom and has been named Spotify’s newest RADAR US artist.

While developing into a star, Doechii is the latest artist to be named as part of Spotify’s program that celebrates and supports emerging artists at all stages of their careers.

The majority of people have had a dream in life. We need to give those who have been putting in significant effort a little push toward their wishes.

RADAR and Other Programs: Background

RADAR is one of Spotify’s most important initiatives for promoting and supporting emerging artists. It has assisted in launching many of today’s most promising artists. In addition, the program has expanded its fan base and attained superstar status through effective marketing, content, and editorial support.

A strong commitment by Spotify to support all levels of artists has resulted in the placement of the viral singer “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” in its RADAR US program.

Also, as part of Spotify’s Island’s Planet Hip-Hop, emerging rapper, Doechii collaborated with the portal earlier this month to create a unique fan experience. It included a virtual avatar and virtual merchandise that reflected her persona as an artist.

Recognition and Appreciation

In a statement, Spotify’s Head of Urban Music and Creative Director, Carl Chery, expressed his appreciation and support for the up-and-coming rapper.

“We’ve been championing Doechii since her breakthrough single ‘Yucky Blucky Fruitcake’ and was featured in our Feelin’ Myself campaign in the summer of 2021,” Chery said. “It’s been exciting to watch her grow from a relatively unknown genre-bender to a burgeoning multifaceted star. Doechii’s future is boundless. We’re thrilled to have her as part of the RADAR program.”

Rapper Doechii Is On The Verge Of Success

Furthermore, with songs like “Feeling Myself” and “Frequency,” Doechii has become a breakout star on Spotify. Her breakout single “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” has been streamed over 37 million times on Spotify.

However, in 2022, Doechii’s career has gained even more significant momentum. The 24-year-old rapper signed with Top Dawg Entertainment, one of the most recognizable labels in the industry. In addition, this label is responsible for producing notable artists such as Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, and SZA.

Above all, TDE has a roster of several talented artists. Collaborating with more famous artists from the label could further advance Doechii’s career. Check out a short video performance of “This B*tch Matters” by Doechii below.

Doechii Talks About TDE & More With The Breakfast Club

Doechii sat down with The Breakfast Club this morning (September 27th) & discussed several topics with the hosts. Most notably the discussion highlighted her role in TDE as the well-respected label’s first official female MC. After appearing on her label mate Isaiah Rashad’s last album The House Is Burning, the California-based record label announced her signing a few months ago. She stated, “It’s a lot of pressure, but it’s good pressure, that I put on myself because it’s like such a dope legacy,” when asked about her experience/role with their team. Take a look at the full Breakfast Club interview below:

Her Relationships With Other Artists On TDE

One thing those at Top Dawg Entertainment are known for is their familial-like environment among their roster. This all started with the Black Hippy group (the original signees of the label) that includes rappers Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock & Schoolboy Q. Now with the roster expanded & Kendrick’s departure, this tradition of the artists being close still continues.

Kendrick himself left around the time Doechii was announced as a new member. Doechii explained that she’s never met Kendrick Lamar in person, “Kendrick be in like Africa. It’s hard to catch him.” According to her though, he did praise & show love to Doechii in conversation. Isaiah Rashad & Ab-Soul were the first artists she truly formed a solid relationship on the label according to her as well. Her & SZA have a great relationship naturally as the only two female signees, but they also have a single out together now which. is doing very well:

The Future For Doechii & Her Music Career

She’s easily one of the most exciting new/young prospects on the label & Hip-Hop in general. TDE is known for fostering its rosters’ talents & truly putting out high quality art. Her signing is especially exciting as she’s already received tons of industry love & mainstream success/appeal. Despite being so young, she’s even managed to land a spot on this year’s XXL freshman list & a BET performance. Do you believe Doechii can have a long career in the Hip-Hop industry?

2022 XXL Freshman Cypher: The Top Freestyles

It’s that time of year again. The XXL Freshman cypher has hit the streets

Twelve upcoming rappers take on an annual killer beat to showcase their skills. Some rose to the occasion as others also fell short. Let’s see who goes crazy in the 2022 XXL Freshman cypher.

2022 XXL Freshman List
2022 XXL Freshman logo/ credit- Travis Shinn for XXL

The XXL Freshman Cypher

The 12 XXL freshmen split into four groups. Cochise, BabyTron, Babyface Ray and Kali team up. Cypher Nardo Wick, Big30, Big Scarr, and KenTheMan also joined together. SoFaygo, Doechii, KayCyy, and Saucy Santana band together.

Each group freestyles over a different beat created by producer Wheezy Outta Here. If you don’t know, Wheezy is a Grammy award winner. He has also worked with Ye, Drake, Lil Uzi Vert, and Future to create top-selling hits.

This opportunity is perfect for each XXL Freshman to flex their rap muscles. Getting to rap on a beat created by Wheezy Outta Here is also a come-up. Some took full advantage of this opportunity and then went.

XXL Freshman Who Stood Out

BabyTron stood out by rapping without a beat, leaving no room for mistakes. Those listening are tuned in to every syllable a rapper utters. Tron also held his own with no instrumental.

Doechii decided to step outside the box during her freestyle. Her unique rap scheme is also hard to ignore. Everything Doechii said then was clear and precise. Nothing was left for the audience to guess. Doechii did not waste one line.

Saucy Santana came to the cypher with one thing on his mind. He came to spit some bars. Santana held nothing back in his freestyle as he was always repping his pride. Nothing was going to stop him from stepping up to the plate.

The Best Freshman Freestyle

KenTheMan also had the best XXL Freshman freestyle. From start to finish, she left little room for improvement. Her bars also remained witty throughout. KenTheMan then continued to raise the bar with each punchline.

“I’m a P, I got some h**s that’s ducked off in the valley/Ask about me, I been 100, my card super valid/I drop a ho, I get another one like DJ Khaled….Saying they don’t like me, liking pictures that’s a contradiction/F**king broke ni**as, getting pregnant, that’s just superstitious…”- KenTheMan

Top Performances At The 2022 BET Awards

The 2022 BET Awards took place Sunday, June 26th, with a wild night of entertainment and top-notch performances! With many awards, also including a lifetime achievement for P. Diddy, the event was star-studded from start to finish. The awards show features astounding performances; this year’s show also was no different.

Top Performances Of The Night

Lizzo

The show kicked off with a bang, with Lizzo bringing the audience to their feet. Opening her performance on the flute, Lizzo then dove into her hit single, “About Damn Time.” The artist was captivating as ever, with a sparkling disco-ball-inspired outfit. Her performance focused on body positivity and the need for social action, donating $1 million to Planned Parenthood.

Jack Harlow

Next, Jack Harlow took the spotlight, starting with his song “Poison.” Strutting around a basement set, Lil Wayne also joins Harlow to round out the track. As Harlow shifts into his hit single, “First Class,” Brandy also enters, much to the crowd’s surprise. Brandy delivers the most compelling lyrics of the performance, spitting her lyrics with absolute venom.

Doechii

Doechii delivered in spades in her debut BET performance. Emerging in all white, the artist opens with “Persuasive,” changing her wardrobe during the song. She then snatches off her wig as the backdrop shifts to black and red, bursting into her single “Crazy.” With a set enveloped in pyrotechnics and strobing visuals, Doechii made a lasting mark on the audience.

Muni Long

Muni Long’s performance shines, starting with “Time Machine.” With an ethereal opening, Long’s smooth lyrics are the focus until her feathered dress expands into a team of background dancers. With her hit “hrs and hrs,” Long’s feature is cemented with her vocals and beautiful choreography.

Final

Finally, the event honored P. Diddy, with Babyface and Kanye West presenting him with the Lifetime Achievement award. His musical tribute featured an unbelievably stacked cast, including Mary J. BligeBusta RhymesFaith Evans, and others. Diddy himself also performed, rattling off hits like “Victory” and “It’s All About The Benjamins.” The late Kim Porter, Diddy’s former partner, capped off the medley in a moving video tribute.

Doechii’s “Crazy” Won’t Be Trending Due To YouTube Ban

Doechii is still riding high off her TDE debut and celebrating a progression in her career. However, today Doechii found out her current release, “Crazy,” will not be getting as much coverage as her release “Persuasive.” Doechii has recently received news that “Crazy” will be banned from trending on YouTube due to its explicit nature.

Doechii’s “Crazy” Banned.

What is explicit about “Crazy?” Why was the single banned?

According to sources, “Crazy” is being banned because it displays nudity and violence. And the social media gatekeepers have found it inappropriate for shares that will likely rank it as a trending single. However, while the social media powers have deemed the video over the top in these areas, Sarah C. Prinz, video director, disagrees with this sentiment. In the words of Prinz

“The film is an expansive metaphor embodying the hardships women go through in their ascension to power.”

The Deeper Truth

Fundamentally “Crazy” is a work of art with more profound significance than what is on visual display. But to see this, one must look beyond the visuals to the message to get to the core.

What is The Message?

According to Prinz, it is a message of feminine empowerment. As she so eloquently phrased it,

“It’s a piece that empowers the exponential capacity of women in the 21st century, in every form of their being.”

As one must agree, the lens of the creator and the viewer does not provide the same clarity.

 Wide-Angled View of Doechii’s Piece

Some artistic liberties taken in the video can be seen as very provocative. However, conversely, some things are put in place that mute some elements that would make the presentation vulgar.

Regardless of the artistry, depending on the viewer, one may see offensive material while others have a more holistic view of what is presented. Truthfully, art is always in the eye of the beholder.

Doechii’s Art

What Doechii is doing in her work is groundbreaking. The edge she walks is a large part of her vision. One must merely consider Doechii’s current sentiments to get a clearer picture. The artist speaks of her new home at Top Dawg and her creative vision in a moment of delight.

“I want to create a new vision, a new lane, and so much music.”

“Crazy” gives fans a glimpse of that.

The Take-Away

Given her recent piece, it is clear that she is on a different plane with her craft. One only needs to look a little bit deeper.

Nevertheless, one has to make of the ban what they may. That’s the way of social media and regulations (red tape). However, it would be a disservice to use the decision of one body to govern the quality of a project. So, with great respect, we convey the message Doechii and Prinz wish to share,

“Both I and Doechii have worked extensively over the last 4 months developing the narrative of this film, intentionally and meticulously crafting each scene and frame to tell a story derived from both of our personal and shared experiences mirroring the character arc of her new album with TDE.”

Admittedly that is admirable.

We applaud Doechii’s artistry and respect her vision. Hip Hop has always been about pushing the boundaries of art, shaping it, and forming it from the clay of experience to share a more profound truth. We celebrate Hip-hop in its various forms.

Doechii: 2022 HipHopDX Rising Star Reportedly Signed by Top Dawg Entertainment

Doechii, 2022 HipHopDX Rising Star, is just getting her foot in the door when it comes to breaking into the industry. Some of her most recent news is sure to get people’s attention.

A report from HITS Daily Double on Tuesday (Mar. 1) stated that Doechii has partnered with the famed West Coast record label, Top Dawg Entertainment. It is not surprising that this signing has occurred, considering Doechii has appeared on Isaiah Rashad’s The House Is Burning LP and on Lil Sunny’s Awesome Vacation Tour.

Moreover, rumors suggest major labels are battling for the rights to distribute the 22-year-old Tampa, Florida native. As a result of the announcement, many TDE fans have wondered about the label’s future. Kendrick Lamar announced in August of 2021 that his next album would be his final release under the legendary brand. He sent shockwaves around the world.

Doechii Gets Acknowledgement

Doechii began making music in 2015 with her track “Girls.” Her single “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” was a viral hit on TikTok, which is part of her upcoming 2020 debut album Oh the Places You’ll Go.

This track has over 2 million views on YouTube, played over 100 million times on TikTok, and streamed more than 30 million times on Spotify. Doechii is a good choice for a 2022 HipHopDX Rising Star due to her individualized style and sound.

More Collaborations

On (Mar. 1), Doechii posted a message on her Instagram page announcing she will be joining forces with BIA, Hip Hop legend Missy Elliott, and EDM superstar DJ’s David Guetta and Afrojack. Following the preview on David Guetta’s Instagram page, this record is called “Trampoline,” a very fast-paced recording. “Trampoline” comes out on Thursday (Mar. 3).

While Doechii recently signed her debut recording contract. BIA signed with Sony under Epic Records and did well on the Billboard charts with the “WHOLE LOTTA MONEY” remix.  This track hit No. 16 on the Hot 100 music chart.

2021 BET Hip Hop Awards: The Standout Performances

Yesterday’s 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards ceremony was, in the best way possible, a lot. On top of numerous award winners, honored guests, cyphers, and red carpet style,  there were extravagant and memorable performances. Your overview of the standout performances, below.

Young Thug & Gunna- “Tick Tock,” “Too Easy,” & “Ski”

https://youtu.be/0Vk5s96YAdM

Young Thug opened the show with a performance of his latest single, “Tick Tock.” Gunna then joined Thug onstage, performing his collaboration with Future, “Too Easy.” To close their opening set, Thug and Gunna performed  their hit track “Ski” before leaving the stage.

The artists’ performance had a lot of decoration to it, even becoming a little surreal. During “Tick Tock,” there was 8-bit imagery projected around the performers, including skyscraper tops in the background and a massive spider under Young Thug’s feet. For Gunna’s entrance, the imagery changed to a night street view from a moving car. And once “Ski” hit, it even began to snow. The 8-bit imagery showed snowboarders racing down the hill, creating an immersive snowscape for the Atlanta awards ceremony.

Baby Keem- “Family Ties”

Baby Keem got on the stage to deliver his hit single “Family Ties” with Kendrick Lamar, though Kendrick himself didn’t visit. The song came out in August to enormous support, and currently has 21 million views on YouTube.

Keem’s performance put him at the center of the BET’s stage, with fires burning in the background and dancers clad in black balaclavas and jackets. The bursts of flames felt like an apt metaphor, considering Keem has been on fire now since the hyped release of his new album, The Melodic Blue.

Tobe Nwigwe & Family- “Fye Fye”

https://youtu.be/oRXWyxUETeQ

Few words are needed to describe this performance, as it speaks for itself. However, it was compelling, profound, and powerful. Tobe Nwigwe bodied the fiery, political track on being black in America. With a full gospel choir supporting on the chorus, Nwigwe had the whole crowd jumping. And when Fat Nwigwe came out in a full gown and headdress to deliver her own powerful verse, the performance took its place as one of the best of the night.

Last summer, Tobe Nwigwe also released a “Passing Through” single in honor of the Juneteenth celebration.

Isaiah Rashad with Doechii & Kal Banx- “Wat U Sed” & “From The Garden”

This “rainy” and lightly saddening performance was a personal favorite. It was also the least surreal, since no large-scale decorations or images were used. However, multiple women are dancing in black suits throughout the performance. Rapper Doechii’s performance was very emotional, cementing her as a rising superstar in hip-hop.

Earlier this year, Isaiah released his “The House is Burning” album to acclaim.
