Kanye West made a surprise appearance at the BET Awards, during which he presented Sean “Diddy” Combs with the esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award. During his speech Kanye praised Diddy as an impactful artist and a trailblazer in the entertainment industry. The highly successful West referred to “Diddy” as his “favorite artist.” He also quoted the Bad Boy mogul as a “King” worthy of a coronation. Ye’s praise of Diddy extended beyond just his talents as a musician. The rapper stated, “This is my favorite artist…everything, not specifically production, the trip.” He then praised Diddy’s business acumen. Ye claimed that Combs understands money, contracts, and the business side of entertainment in a way superior to other artists. Afterwards, Diddy gave a speech in which he expressed appreciation to God followed by his mother. The rapper then stated he plans on donating a million dollars to Howard University and Jackson State.
A Rare Honor
The BET Lifetime Achievement Award is an honor that cements an artists legacy in the history books of pop culture. Sean “Diddy” Combs now joins an elite, and short, list of entertainers in the upper echelon of stardom. Among the many notable names on the list are, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, Prince, Smokey Robinson, and even actor Samuel L. Jackson. RnB and Soul singers dominated the early years of the list. It seemed to many as though Rappers were on being excluded from the awards consideration. That has started to change as of recently. The BET awards seemed to be on a progression towards naming rappers as worthy of the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award. Mary J. Blige and New Edition, both RnB acts who associated with rap frequently received the honor in 2019 and 2017 respectively. Afterwards in 2021 Queen Latifah became the first rapper to win the award.
This pattern continued into this year. With Diddy’s award and a surprise visit from an esteemed though controversial figure like Ye it seems as though the BET awards no longer fear recognizing rappers-turned-business icons for their cultural contribution.
