Professionals in the music industry understand several important components to be successful. No one understands those aspects better than Logic and Danny Brown. Last week Brown and Logic sat down to talk about the craft of writing as it relates to artistry. And the conversation went a little deep.
The Importance of Lyricism (Song Writing)
One of the most important aspects of the career of a music artist is lyricism. This is a particularly integral component in the success and longevity of hip-hop artists. A factor of primacy that many hip-hop/rap artists find themselves judged on is lyrical prowess. No matter how dope the bass line or hype the beat drop, messy songwriting can destroy a track. Now, those on the outside are not all too familiar with the process. For some of those behind the pen, things can get difficult. This is especially the case when the penman develops a case of writer’s block.
Logic and Danny Brown Discuss Flow
Danny Brown, who was excited to host and have an earnest conversation with Logic, approached the subject of lyricism. Extremely enthused by Logic’s talent, Brown asked how he does what he does. This was a subject wherein Logic didn’t need to be deliberate. He knew his strengths well and acknowledged that it’s different for everybody. Everyone has their own methodology, but for him, it’s in him. In his words,
“I got this s*** that’s just like pent up in me…”
So, he doesn’t have to dig too deep it flows.
But when addressing the broader question of what other lyricists need to do to have the same type of flow, Logic went back to something that inspired him. According to Logic, what he derived from another wise writer, the only way to get rid of writer’s block is to write. As the Nike Slogan puts it, “Just Do It!”

Brown didn’t leave at that. As he put it, for the most part, those who complain of inability to come up with material it’s an excuse. “When the artist writes about their life, there ain’t no writer’s block. If you telling the truth, it ain’t no writer’s block. When you’re trying to be cool and trying to make up bars and trying to do shit, yeah, you going to have writer’s block ’cause shit gon’ get dry.” Which is a valid point. Most creative output is born out of experience. Authenticity breeds realism. When one’s experiences are rich, so is the content.
Who is Logic
Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, known as Logic, is a master lyricist. To his credit, he has over two decades in the music industry. But while the art of writing may flow easier for Logic, that’s only part of the equation. When it comes to focus and drive, Logic has always had it. In an interview with Complex, he once said,
“Determination, persistence, realism, wanting success more than your next breath—that’s the key to success.”
And no one would argue that such isn’t equal, if not more important. What Logic provides is insight from someone who knows the craft like the back of his hand. He is a true artist in every sense of the word. He’s masterful and passionate, and when wisdom and experience are the teachers, then those who wish to succeed listen. And to get an accurate picture, one need only check out his output.
Brown’s Contribution
Danny Brown is an industry contemporary of Logic who has also made a name for himself. However, he has had to put in a little more effort. But he isn’t afraid to admit this and candidly states in his convo. While some may balk at such admissions, it’s commendable. Brown knows who he is, his level of skill, and what it takes to be successful. And whether it takes tremendous effort or little, the point is you arrive. For those that want to catch Brown in action this summer, According to HotNewHiphop, Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA will embark on a tour from July 25th through August 26th.
The biggest takeaway from this discourse is that everyone’s creative process is different. But when courting success, there are no such things as excuses.
