Missy Elliot On GMA: Talks Journey From Hip-Hop Pioneer To Rock Hall Inductee

Today, Missy Elliot took some time out to grace Good Morning America with her presence. This move comes as Missy Elliot is about to make history as the first female rap artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an accolade she deserves.

This is an extraordinary moment, considering the love and respect the artist has earned.

Supa Dupa Fly

Missy Elliot’s accomplishments are undeniably impressive. Her journey, marked by dedication and hard work, has culminated in well-deserved recognition. While the reason for the honor needs no explaining, for those pondering, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame provides a compelling summary.

Among her notable milestones, Missy Elliot stands out as the first female rapper — and only the third hip-hop artist — to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and to receive the MTV Video Vanguard Award. And this is a mere glimpse into her vast array of achievements.

Missy Elliot’s Initial Response

In May, upon hearing of her induction, Missy Elliot immediately shared her reactions on social media. Billboard recorded her Tweet, saying,

“I am immensely moved – this isn’t just a monumental moment for me, but for all my fellow women in HIPHOP; it’s an opened door that highlights our hard work and the significant contributions many of us have made to MUSIC. My morning has been full of tears out of sheer GRATITUDE; a heartfelt thank you to @rockhall, everyone on the committee, and my Supafriends.”

Such a response merely reflects the humility that characterizes Elliot. As the induction ceremony draws closer, she has chosen to candidly share more about her life, career, and this prestigious recognition with Good Morning America.

Elliot Sits Down with Robin Roberts

A radiant Missy Elliot sat opposite Roberts. She was eager and prepared to share. Elliot was deeply appreciative. And like a polished professional, she responded to each question succinctly and enthusiastically. On being queried about her emotions regarding her achievement, her face lit up. She spoke on her ongoing astonishment yet immense gratitude, saying, “I’m still struggling to find the words. It just hasn’t sunk in. In the hip-hop world, such things often feel out of reach.”

Yet, Missy’s induction beautifully illustrates that even seemingly impossible dreams can become reality.

More on Elliot’s GMA interview

The interview continued. And Elliot delved deeper, sharing her thoughts on what Rock n Roll signifies to her. Then, she went on to express her feelings about joining the ranks of legends like Sheryl Crowe, Willie Nelson, and Chaka Khan.

On a more personal note, Missy Elliot spoke of her mother. She fondly recounts why her mother has missed her other live performance. But adds how she eagerly anticipates her presence at a live performance for the first time. Finally, she opened up about her health challenges. Her passion for giving back to her successors was on full display. But the interview’s highlight came in its final moments, with Robin Roberts reiterating Elliot’s profound belief.

“She [Elliot] believes when you get blessings, it’s not for one to harbor for themselves.”

Much Success

From all of us at FM Hip Hop, congratulations to the incomparable Missy Elliot. As we look forward, we’re filled with anticipation. For with her unparalleled creativity and innovation, anything she touches promises to be spectacular. And we can’t wait to see what she contributes in the future.

However, If you missed her profound GMA interview, set aside time to witness this touching conversation.

Hip-Hop Veteran Magoo Has Reportedly Died

The hip-hop world is mourning as they have lost a legendary influence. Rapper Magoo has reportedly died at the age of 50 on Sunday. Magoo, born as Melvin Barcliff, was best known as one-half of the hip-hop duo – Timbaland & Magoo. Barcliff’s cause of death has not been released to the public yet. Neither his family nor Timbaland and Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliot have released a statement.

Timbaland & Magoo’s album cover for Indecent Proposal.

Magoo’s Musical Background

Timbaland & Magoo are from Norfolk, Virginia. The rap duo met when they were teenagers. They grew popular in 1997 with their debut single, “Up Jumps da’ Boogie.” The hit single featured Missy Elliot and the late Aaliyah. These artists became known as The Superfriends. The dynamic duo had ties with Larry Live and Pharrell Williams prior forming a group called SBI (Surrounded by Idiots). Magoo had written on Ginuwine albums and Missy Elliot’s debut, Supa Dupa Fly.

Is Magoo Responsible For Missy Elliot’s Iconic Nickname?

The “Work” rapper allegedly was gifted her nickname “Misdemeanor” from Magoo. Elliot revealed in an interview, “It was my high school friend Magoo who gave me the nickname because he said that it was a crime for someone to possess so many talents.” Barcliff later introduced Missy and Tim.

Heartbreaking Tributes To The Virginia Rapper

Music producer Digital Black broke the news in a social media post. The R&B star shared the legendary duo’s album cover of 1997 “Welcome to Our World.” Black added a heartbreaking caption reading, “Man can’t believe this RIH Magoo damn big bro wasn’t ready for this at all #superfriends.” R&B legend Ginuwine dedicated a post to Magoo as well. “Totally one of the best ever in my eyes,” said the “Pony” singer. He added that the love has always been there and will always be there, even though they did not speak to each other a lot.

We send our condolences to his family and friends.

Timbaland talks about Missy Elliot’s First Album In More Than Fifteen Years

Hit-maker Timbaland, birth name Timothy Zachery Mosley, is giving details on legendary artist Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliot’s new album.

How Does The Album Sound?

Timbaland told Variety the songs for her new album are givin’ upbeat and youthful Missy Elliot.

Timbo stresses that he wanted the music to sound how they both look: young.

“We both look like we 19. I know how Missy works: It’s got to be new and fun — or maybe not so much new as kind of underground, and everything is upbeat,” said the record producer.

“Latin Feel” On A Few Songs

He added a “Latin feel” is present in some of the songs.

“Almost a Bad Bunny effect. Some of it’s kinda like underground Brazilian funk. People gonna eat it up — and it might reach just a different demographic of people. It’s like it’s her doing… not reggaeton but Missy-ton,” Timbaland mentioned in the interview.

The Virginia native hopes this new album will include features from Latin artists such as Bad Bunny and Young Miko.

Timbaland knows that Elliot’s influence is “Global.”

So, it looks like that is the sound he is reaching for with this new album.

We can expect this musical masterpiece as soon as this summer.

Mosley is collaborating not only with his longtime friend Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliot but also with his good friend Justin Timberlake.

Their album is complete, but Timbo is waiting for Timberlake to determine the release date.

The Cookbook Was Missy Elliot’s Last Full Album, More Than 15 Years Ago

Missy Elliot has not released a full album in more than 15 years; her last was “The Cookbook.”

The 2005 album included “We Run This,” “Bad Man,” and the mega-hit “Lose Control” featuring Ciara. “Fat Man Scoop” also joined “The Cookbook.”

Missy Elliot’s Latest Music

She most recently released her 2019 EP, “Iconology.”

But you have heard Missy’s musical genius spreading throughout the industry lately in rapper BIA’s “I’m That B**ch,” which samples her 1999 “She’s a B**ch.”

Plus, Chlöe’s new album features Missy on “Told Ya.”

In addition, British girl group Flo’s single “Fly Girl” featuring the Virginia native. That song is mainly an interpolation of Missy’s 2002 “Work It.”

DJ Cassidy Announcement Preludes To One Lit Summer

Summer is hot, but it is about to get much hotter for hip-hop fans, and DJ Cassidy is the cause.

Two days ago, DJ Cassidy made an insane announcement that would put fans’ heads on a swivel. According to Cassidy, he is bringing 25 hip-hop legends together for a special Pass the Mic. Fans will hear top-tier trailblazers do what they do in one space and time, and it doesn’t get any better. To say such is less than historical would be a lie.

Who’s on the Docket

Everybody has their favorite pioneer, but only some have heard them in full effect live. According to Cassidy, some of the featured artists include Rakim, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane Kid n Play, and Roxanne Shante, to name a few. The list is spectacular. And July 21 at Radio City Music Hall in New York is the time and place.

Cassidy and Pass the Mic

This event is significant for many reasons. The roster alone is proof of its significance. It is also a special segment of Pass the Mic. Those who know, know that Cassidy’s show was officially retired in October 2022, two years after its inception. Cassidy premiered Pass the Mic when people needed to be uplifted the most. In July 2020, during uncertain times, Pass the Mic made its premiere, and it was everything many people needed in their lives. It’s been said that music has healing power, and Cassidy set up a platform to bring healing to the masses right in the comfort of their homes. Legend Rakim was one of those who fully got down with what it was Cassidy was bringing. According to Rakim,

‘When Cassidy called me about his ‘Pass The Mic’ project in the middle of lockdown, I immediately saw it as a way to reach out to my peers and my fans … to bring some light to dark times,” Billboard notes.

Light Cassidy and his guests delivered in spades.

Monumental Significant In Many Manners

This comes when globally hip-hop is being recognized for its half-century impact. And according to Cassidy, this is not only to honor hip-hop and the legends, but it’s also a gift to him. In the words of Cassidy.

“Uniting 25 native New York icons of hip-hop’s golden age on one stage for one night in the birthplace of hip-hop, also my hometown, will be the greatest honor of my life.

Mark your Calendars

This summer in a once in a lifetime event inspired by a DJ with a heart of gold and made possible by Martell Cognac and Black Promoters Collective (BPC), fans will experience the magic. They will have the unique opportunity to witness those who put themselves and their skills on the line to breathe life into the art form that has moved a nation, hip hop. According to Billboard, tickets for the event will be available to the broader public starting April 14 at 10 am.

Female Hip-Hop Rappers Such As Coi Leray, BIA, and Missy Elliot Release Lit Tracks

Female hip-hop rappers are giving everyone straight fire lately.

The collabs are hot, the beats are hotter, and the bars catch fire in every speaker you hear.

Hip-hop girlies Coi LerayBIABaby TateSaweetieFlo MilliLola BrookeLattoYung Miami, and Missy Elliot are the gifts that keep on giving.

Each track had a different vibe and interesting collaboration, but it worked elegantly.

Coi Leray’s “On Player (Remix)” And “Nonsense (Remix)”

Starting with Coi Leray, she dropped two remixes in the past 48 hours, with one of hip-hop’s finest Busta Rhymes and the other with popstar Sabrina Carpenter.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Big Trend Setter (@coileray)

Two completely different artists, but Coi is such a ‘trendsetter’ and popstar that she can pull off the legendary “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See” backtrack under her song “Players.”

However, “Nonsense (Remix)” with Sabrina Carpenter was an exciting breath of fresh air that was still Coi with a cute pop twist.

I tip my hat to the Boston native.

BIA And Timbaland’s “I’M THAT B**TCH”

Then we get into BIA

Bianca Miquela Landrau always delivers. She took on the daring beat of Missy Elliot and Timbaland’s “She’s a B**ch” for her version “I’M THAT B**TCH.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by BIA ✍🏽 (@bia)

She really got a co-sign when Missy Elliot congratulated her on the legend’s Instagram story.

Plus, Timbaland helped her make the track. I think that is the biggest co-sign you could get.

It’s a riveting take on the original song, meeting the present sample with an almost drill beat underneath BIA‘s lyrics.

Baby Tate And Saweetie’s “Hey Mickey!”

Next, Baby Tate and Saweetie‘s “Hey Mickey!” gives us the cute baddie vibe they both exude.

A pop song that turned into a fused pop and hip-hop version.

The Atlanta native always has fun with any of her releases, so it was only right that she paired with Saweetie.

A post shared by Baby Tate (@imbabytate)

The California native born as Diamonté changed her flow up a little with Tate.

It was a nice little shock and made me proud to hear the ‘Icy Girl’ give us something different.

Flo Milli’s “Bed Time (Remix)” With Monaleo And Gloss Up

Furthermore, Flo Milli teamed up with newer mainstream female rappers Monaleo and Gloss Up.

Three of them remixed Flo’s single off her latest album, “Bed Time.”

The lyrics were givin’ ‘I’m going to have my girls’ backs whenever and wherever.’

Monaleo and Gloss Up’s voices and lyrics complement Flo Milli’s cutesy voice pretty well.

Lola Brooke’s “Don’t Play With It” With Latto and Yung Miami

In addition, Lola Brooke’s “Don’t Play With It” is TikTok viral. The New York rapper was the bombshell the industry needed.

So, of course, Latto and Yung Miami had to hop on the train. These two are in the group of some of the hottest female rappers.

It is a great look for Lola Brooke.

Latto and Yung Miami sound like they had fun on this track. Caresha even trolls her fans about Diddy in her verse.

FLO With Missy Elliot’s Fly Girl

Finally, we have Hip-Hop royalty who is the legendary Missy Elliot. FLO is a new girl group from the UK that probably has the potential to be the next Destiny’s Child.

It was smart for them to get Missy on “Fly Girl” because the chorus comes from the Virginia native’s hit “Work It.”

Hearing Missy Elliot rapping again slapped a smile on my face. No one has a flow like her, and her voice just takes me back to the early 2000s.

The females continue to take the industry by storm, and I hope they keep us all on the edge of our seats.

Hip-Hop Salute to Queens of The Culture: “Still We Rise”

In 2023 Queens of the Culture reign supreme. And this is a hip-hop salute to some of the great women doing their thing, claiming their thrones, holding their crowns, and creating legacies with utmost grace and elegance.

All Hail Queens Of 2023

2023 has just begun and has already been outstanding for some phenomenal women. Of mention are Beyonce, Angela Bassett, Missy Elliot, Viola Davis, Lizzo, and Letitia Wright. And while many more women have risen to great acclaim, here’s to the few who have grabbed the 2023 spotlight showcasing their excellence.

Queen Of The Culture #1: Beyonce

Beyonce

Beyonce is a force of nature. Her business acumen, style, and work ethic are incomparable. With every move she makes, she creates a blueprint for excellence. But what more does one expect from someone who has lived most of their life perfecting a craft? Beyonce has been putting in work for over three decades.

From her humble beginnings as a member and front leader of Destiny Child in the 90s to her ascension and claim to Queen Bey, she has exemplified greatness. And her work has culminated in a massive win. February 2023 would forever solidify Bey’s legacy as a consummate artist. According to the New York Times, “Beyoncé made Grammy history… setting a record at the 65th annual ceremony for the most career wins by any artist,” making her a royal amongst royals in the music industry.

Queen Of The Culture #2: Angela Bassett

Bassett is film royalty. She has portrayed some of the most iconic Black women of the culture and done so with absolute finesse. Her filmography is noteworthy and speaks for itself.

However, one thing becomes evident every time the star graces the screen. Bassett wears a cloak of regality. And no role has showcased that better than her portrayal as the Queen of Wakanda and mother of T’challa. The world recognized her stature this year. Her mesmerizing performance as Queen Ramonda led to a most noteworthy achievement. According to CBS News,

“Angela Bassett made history when she won the Golden Globe for best supporting actress in a film for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” becoming the first performer to win a Globe in an acting category for their role in a Marvel film.”

As most know, she wears the crown of excellence with every role. And this is one of many achievements in recognition of her greatness.

Queen Of The Culture #3: Viola Davis

Viola Davis’s talent is immeasurable. If there was anyone who could lay claim to the adage “Your gift will make room for you,” she could. Her presence is magnetizing, and she commands an audience on small or big screens.

Viola Davis

Davis’s natural talents and beauty are bar none. And never was a role so excellently played than her performance as the mighty General Nansica of the Agojie in the feature film “The Woman King.” Although a general, it was undeniable that royalty was an indelible part of her DNA. However, the moving delivery of her book “Finding Me” led to Davis becoming the 15th individual in history to gain EGOT status, an honor befitting the best of the best.

Queen Of The Culture #4: Missy Elliot

Missy is one of the most talented women to step onto the hip-hop scene. Her contributions are enormous. Missy is a trendsetter and never fails in whatever capacity she takes on. Elliot is the showstopper and undoubtedly holds the pattern for originality. She came fully as herself in a world where everyone else was striving to make it with cookie-cutter images. She was unapologetically Missy Misdemeanor Elliot.

Missy Elliot

As a style maven, choreographer, writer, producer, and performance artist, Elliot is the undisputed Queen of boss moves. And this year, she received a few of the choicest flowers. According to E Online,

“Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2023 nominees on February 1 with the rapper reaching a major milestone as the first female Hip Hop Artist to receive the honor.”

Queen of the Culture #5: Lizzo

If it could be said that Missy was the original, Lizzo is the next-level archetype. She, like Missy, has made it in the industry entirely as herself. Her bravery, confidence, and artistry are refreshing. She stands as a steadfast example of being beautiful in your own skin. She models excellence. Her grace and elegance are breathtaking.

And in 2023, Lizzo received another well-deserved honor. Lizzo, who has been serving and shining in her capacity since she first took the mic, took home the Grammy for Record of the year “About Damn Time.”

While it may seem like small potatoes compared to other achievements, it is no small thing. This win has moved Lizzo closer to achieving the coveted EGOT status, as she now has an Emmy and a plethora of Grammys, which she took home in 2020.

Queen Of The Culture #6: Letitia Wright

Queens Of The Culture; Letitia Wright
Letitia Wright. Image source: Scott Garfitt, Invision, AP.

Finally, we recognize Letitia Wright, who brilliantly played Shuri, the brilliant intellect and tech-savvy sister of T’challa. She owned the screen alongside Bassett in the recent Marvel Epic, “Black Panther Wakanda Forever.” However, unlike Letitia’s counterparts, her achievement for the year comes from her home country. According to Caribbean Loop. Wright left the country of Guyana at the age of eight. However, she has made a massive name in the entertainment industry. According to the source,

“She began her career with appearances on Top Boy, Coming Up, Chasing Shadows, Humans, Doctor Who, and Black Mirror. And subsequently, Wright received a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for the latter.”

But that is only a portion of her accomplishments. Wright went on to win a SAG and an image award from the NAACP for her portrayal of Shuri. But most recently, she received a tremendous honor from Guyana, an appreciation and recognition award for her work and craft. On February 1, 2023, Letitia Wright was awarded an honorary Doctorate in arts and letters from The University of Guyana.

In Conclusion

All hail these beautiful women and cultural leaders who exemplify what talent, dedication, and hard work render. We salute them for continuing to exhibit regality, for being living demonstrations of the immortal words of great poet laureate Maya Angelou. “… Still, we rise.”

Missy Elliot Boulevard

The Grammy winner’s street will be Missy Elliot Boulevard.  It is currently McLean Street.  The officials of the city of Portsmouth all voted in favor of Missy Elliot Boulevard and some even wanted to give her a key to the city.  Missy certainly does deserve it all.  She is often referred to as the “Queen of Rap” as she has been ranked the top female rapper ever in various publications.  Missy is also the best-selling female rapper in music history.  In 2020, she was ranked the fifth greatest music video artist of all time by Billboard.  Erin Carter, the city council, said this is important for the citizens of Portsmouth, especially children.  She adds that this will only help them dream big and make them feel like they can achieve great things as well.  Just like someone from their hometown.

Women Empowerment

Missy Elliot recently got a shoutout from Nicki Minaj.  Nicki Minaj will receive the 2022 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV VMAs.  After Missy took to Twitter to congratulate her on this feat, Nicki responded by praising Missy and saying she is responsible for her to be able to win the award.  Missy won this same award in 2019.  In fact, she was the first female MC to win the prestigious award. Throughout the world today, Missy Elliot received accolades for earning her star on the Hollywood walk of Fame.

According to media buzz, after over two decades in the music industry, the Hip-Hop icon Missy Elliot will receive a star with her name on it.

“Elliott’s star will sit outside the new location of Amoeba Music on Hollywood Boulevard, alongside the names of other musical artists,” msn.com notes.

And Hip-Hop fans couldn’t be prouder of the consummate artist.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Like Missy Elliot, inductees to the Hollywood Walk of Fame fall into five categories. The categories include; motion pictures, television, recording or music, radio, and theatre/live performance. Also, according to IMDB.com:

“One of the most honorary moments in an entertainer’s career is being put on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and to go down in history as one of the greatest….”

Without a doubt, receiving a star is a serious achievement.

Elliot’s Shining Moments

Certainly, Missy Misdemeanor Elliot has earned the privilege. Missy is not only a female emcee, but to her credit, she is also a producer, writer, singer, and style maven. Moreover, she has the receipts as proof of all that she is due.

The star is far from Elliot’s first achievement. As of note, in 2019, Missy was the first female hip-hop artist and third rapper overall to receive induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

And if nothing, her body of work, whether behind the mic, pen, or in the production studio, proves she’s way more than ‘Supa Dupa Fly.’

Taylor splits the album into 5 sections or ‘studios’ that utilize a different letter of the title and encompassing mood. Studio A is all about the lovey-dovey romance opening with the recording of the 911 call from the birth of Junie. Studio L transitions into the sensual side of Taylor with songs like ‘1800-One-Night’, ‘Morning’, ‘Boomin’, ‘69’. Studio B is all about expressing your self worth with the island flare of ‘Killa’, ‘Bad’, ‘Wrong Bitch’, ‘Shoot It Up’, and ‘Bare With Me’.
