6ix9ine, Uncle Murda, 50 Cent and Casanova Get The Strap

G-G-G-G-G Unit! Boom Boom Boom! Stuuupid! Salutations FM Trendsetters! Better grab a bulletproof Teflon slug-proof vest! Make sure you also, in my 50 Cent voice, “Get the strap!”  This term has been all over social media for months now.  According to 50 cent himself, he coined the infamous hash-tagged phrase, as he uses it in most of his posts!  But now the phrase has capitalized into a lifestyle and culture, as it is the most widely used hash-tag on social media.  Mr. Jackson used this to produce and promote merchandise and apparel.  But now, fresh for the soundtrack to the 5th season of Power,  the music video to the song, based on the phrase of the same name, was released Monday on YouTube, through 50 Cent’s channel.  It was also released via ThisIs50.com, his website.

#CherryJuice: ‘Power’ actress Donshea Hopkins talks Raina’s death, her own blessed life

R.I.P. “Raina St. Patrick,” but Donshea is still winning

While fame is nothing new for Donshea Hopkins, the past few months have brought increased attention to the actress, artist, and athlete. Hopkins is best known for her portrayal of “Raina St. Patrick,” the daughter of Omari Hardwick’s character on, “Power,” and one of the few innocent characters on the hit Starz series. At the end of last season, however, Raina was murdered in cold blood while her brother looked on in disbelief. The sudden and tragic demise of the character sent shock waves through legions of “Power” fans across the world, and even touched those previously unfamiliar with the show. For Hopkins, it signaled a new chapter. At just 15 years old, her talents and successes already span acting, music, and figure skating, and she will continue to pursue all of her passions. In an exclusive interview with FM Hip Hop, Donshea Hopkins discussed her upcoming projects and the outpouring of support she has received from fans.

FM HIP HOP: You’ve received a lot of attention following the death of Raina, with a spotlight on you and your talents.

DONSHEA HOPKINS: Yes! I’ve had people walk up to me, people that have never watched the show, and they were like, “Oh my God, you were all over my timeline on Instagram. You’ve been trending this whole month, and I just had to watch ‘Power.'” And when people finally watch the whole thing and they got to season four, they were crying. And then some people didn’t even watch it, they just heard what happened, and they started crying. It’s been amazing what impact that has had on people. I knew that some people in other countries watched it, but it’s so crazy– people in Brazil that watch the show, people in the UK. I knew that people would be shocked, sad, and upset, but a few people broke their TVs and their phones, and they were screaming and crying. They were doing videos and holding memorial services. The lovely people at Level Up Apparel made these #BringRainaBack t-shirts, and you can buy them at levelupshopny.bigcartel.com. Most of the proceeds are going to Convoy of Hope for hurricane relief, and March of Dimes for awareness on premature births.

FM: Your character was really developed in the past season, and that gave people some closure as well.

DH: I was glad that Raina got more of a speaking role this season. That’s something that I actually spoke to Courtney Kemp, the creator of the show, about: “I really want Raina to have more of a role this season. In season three, she was really breaking out of her shell, but can we get more from her?” And [Courtney said], “Are you ready? Of course we can get more from Raina. We can build on it.”

FM: You put out some statements regarding your feelings about that episode, questioning whether the death was necessary and how the scene could have been changed. You’ve had a lot of time to process it, and the fans have as well. Do you feel differently about Raina’s death now?

DH: I just want to clear this up because in interviews people thought I was complaining and I wasn’t. I was just expressing how I felt at the time when I found out. I only found out a week before the death scene took place. The next day was literally the table read, and it felt so rushed. At first I was just really shocked like, “This can’t be happening.” And then of course I was upset, but I was more sad than anything. These four-and-a-half, five years are coming to an end. It was really sad having to say goodbye to everyone, but of course it’s not goodbye because you know you’ll probably work with them sometime again soon. But realizing that you won’t be going [to set] almost every day or every week is something that you have to get used to.

At first it was really sad and the whole thing was surreal. And then a month later it hits you and you’re like, “Wow I’m really dead. This is really happening.” And then people walk up to you– because you know that you’re dead, but a lot of people don’t know– and they say, “I can’t wait for your character to grow,” and you have to keep it going. And then when it finally comes out, there’s this huge pressure off your shoulders. You don’t have to keep it a secret. It’s good to know that other people were feeling somewhat the same way you felt when you heard the news. By now I’m cool with it, and I’m totally moving on to bigger and better things. But I’ll always love “Power.” That was my breakout role. I’m always going to hold Raina in a special little box in my heart, and the whole cast and crew. There’s no bad blood or anything– I love everyone over there. They’re family.

FM: Are you taking a break from acting?

DH: I’m definitely not taking a break. Acting is my love and music is my love, so I’m working on both right now. I’m always moving and I always have auditions for shows, movies, and a lot of different things. I’m currently taping a movie and I’m writing some shows on my own. I’m definitely still working, and I’m definitely still acting. I’m still out there working on commercials and a whole bunch of stuff.

FM: What are you working on on the music side?

DH: I am working on some new music. I’m working on the acoustic version of my EP, 3Point2. The regular version of 3Point2 is available now for downloading and streaming everywhere. [The EP] is leading up to the album, and I’m working on the album too. As far as performances, I do know that I probably have a few coming up towards the end of October or beginning of November. When I do perform, I’m going to post about it on my social media: Instagram at @Donshea_Hopkins and Twitter at @DonsheaH. We also have the “Talk to ‘Em” music video and we’re going to start work on the “3Point2” music video.

FM: You’re also passionate about ice skating?

DH: I am! I used to be a competitive figure skater up until I was about 12 [years old]. I had to stop because we were shooting “Power” and I broke my arm. My agents and my managers were like, “No, you cannot do this. You can’t figure skate anymore.” I was heartbroken and I was so upset. I definitely want to get back into it because I was almost right there to where I could have went to nationals, which would have been an awesome feeling. But now that I’m not shooting, I’m going to get back into it. There have actually been actresses that have been to the Olympics, and then they still carry on with their career. So if I can, I definitely would love to go to the Olympics, nationals, internationals– to just inspire other girls of color and even their parents. I feel like the arts are so shunned in black communities and minority communities, and it grows because there’s not a lot of representation. But if you see other people that look like you that are doing it, then you’re going to want to do it.

FM: Are there any other projects that you’re currently working on?

DH: A podcast that I was working on this spring, “The Ghost of Jessica Majors,” is out now. It’s available for downloading on iTunes, and it’s available for streaming on the Pinna app. It tells the story of these three kids, and one is a ghost, [“Jessica”]. She leaves the spiritual world because she was never really at peace, because she doesn’t know what happened to her. They have to solve the mystery of what happened to her and get her back to her family. Or, she can stay a normal, regular girl, and actually live out the rest of her days. It’s scary, it’s creepy, but it’s fun, and it’s really great for all ages. If you love Halloween, then you’re going to love the story.

#FMFeline: Celebrity massage therapist Valencia Woods

Valencia Woods

Marc Anthony, “Power” stars, and more trust
Massage & Body Work by VDOT

Celebrities including Marc Anthony, “Power” actor Michael Rainey Jr., rapper 2 Milly, and Ruff Ryders artist Brillo rely on Valencia Woods’ Massage & Body Work by VDOT for their therapeutic massage needs. Woods believes in the healing power of trained hands, and also incorporates breathing exercises, essential oils, and bongers– ancient massage tools that improve circulation and relieve tension. After working for franchises such as Massage Envy and The Party Spa, she decides to form her own business– Massage & Body Work by VDOT.

Although just recently founded, the company counts many celebrities as clients due to Woods’ entertainment industry connections and referrals from her years in the business. In addition, she is passionate about critical issues such as domestic violence and sex trafficking, and works with charities such as the United Luz Foundation to raise awareness and help combat abuse and exploitation. Follow Valencia Woods and Massage & Body Work by VDOT on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, and read more about her journey below.

The Beginning

I went to [the School of Performing Arts], which is now Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. A [fellow] actress and I used to massage each other all the time. We were always dancing — ballet, modern, tap, and jazz– so our bodies were pretty sore. I realized that I was good at it, and a lot of people wanted me to massage them– my mother, my cousins, anyone that would let me massage them, I would massage them.

I had lived in California for a couple of years and then moved to New Jersey. I said to myself, “I’m going to get up and I’m going to go to massage school, and I’m going to do it.” I finished in a year instead of two years. I went full-time, and I really put my all into it. After I graduated, I worked in the top-notch spas that you can think of in Jersey. I took a break for a little while, and then got back into it because I ended up working for a company called The Party Spa. It’s a celebrity mobile spa, and I did really, really great at that company. I guess I blew my status up, and I just decided to take it to another level and start my own company, which is called Massage & Body Work by VDOT. With The Party Spa, we ended up doing lot of celebrities, but I’ve done celebrities before The Party Spa. I learned a lot from the company, and I decided that I needed to branch out on my own and do my own thing.

Also, every Monday I work for a show called “Party and Bulls*** Show” which features Jack Thriller from ThisIs50.com. A lot of celebrities come through there every Monday, and I’ve had the pleasure of massaging [Michael Rainey Jr., who plays] “Tariq” from “Power,” Tomike Ogugua from “Power,”  a lot of actors, and hip-hop artists. It’s been a pleasure. I’m really into the therapeutic purposes of massage, but all of the pomp and circumstance that comes along with it is always a pleasure.

On being a successful entrepreneur

I’m just a good hustler. I get out there; I network well. People hire me once they feel my hands. They’re like, “This girl is the truth; she knows what she’s doing.” I graduated massage school with a 3.62 GPA, which I’m very proud of, and I really am passionate about my occupation. I’ll do it until I can’t anymore.

The response that I’m getting from people is vey overwhelming. I’m embracing it, but I’m very humbled and overwhelmed by it. It’s just really a nice feeling and a nice situation. I really want to take it as far as I can take it, as far as opening up lots of mobile spas everywhere, and actual spas. That’s my ultimate goal. And teaching the benefits of therapeutic and holistic massage.

Advice for massage professionals seeking independence or celebrity clientele

Be patient and be humble… don’t be selfish. Don’t be too shy to ask questions if you don’t know [something]. Go out there and network, and continue your education. And always be positive, even on a bad day. When there’s a bad day, you have to make it a beautiful day. You have to make a rainbow out of it. I’m never giving up.

#HipHop4Her: The Modern Woman

Women have evolved through time, mainly in societal manners. In the past women were never seen as the breadwinner. Women were the nurturers, the ones to stay home and take care of the children. Get the groceries, clean the house and make sure there is food on the table when the husband goes on. Of course some of the ideologies of how a woman should be stuck around through time. Women are still considered the nurturers but at the same time have the capability of bringing home the money. With Hillary Clinton running for office, there is nothing you can tell the modern woman these days.

Women have become a threat to men; they are competition for jobs and competition for successes. A woman in a power position seem to strike a nerve in the minds of men. Women shouldn’t make more money, than men. Women shouldn’t have a CEO title next to their name. And women shouldn’t beat men at anything, especially sports. It’s like a stab to their integrity. However with the years passing, women are making it a mission to become noticed by society. That they too are making power moves because women are still behind in owning leadership roles.

Despite the fact that women may not acquire as many leadership roles, they receive 60 percent of undergraduate degrees and 60 percent of master’s degrees. They own 47 percent of law degrees and 48 percent of medical degrees. The advancement of women has grown immensely through years but doesn’t change the fact that they are still treated differently in the work place. Women still earn 78 cents to a man’s $1. It is an even wider gap with women of color compared to white men.

In the 1980’s there were no women in any rankings of the Fortune 100, by 2001 11 percent of those corporate leaders were women. Even though the rankings have changed women still struggle with achieving leadership positions. The percentage of women on United States corporate boards has been stuck in the 12.1-12.3 percent range for the past decade. As for Hillary Clinton running for the presidential candidacy, this can motivate more women to start their own businesses, become lawyers, doctors, editors, and CEO’s.

#HipHop4Her: Is there really Power of the P?

When I think of the vagina, I think of Gold, a light shining between our legs. The fountain of youth that every man was killing for. Do I believe in Kitty power? Why yes of course. It is the cause of breakups, makeups, and startups. It allows women to socially climb, and it makes men do things they thought they’d never do. Women know that they have an advantage and that it lies right between their legs. But do we know how to use it, not all the time and not all women. If we learned to use it properly, women would most likely run the world.

If women learned how to use that power, the rate of committed relationships would be higher. Maybe even the percentage of deadbeat fathers and STD’s would be lower. This would only happen if women kept it in a safe until marriage, but that’s uncommon at this day in age. Women can still hold out, even if it’s not until marriage. We know that men want the cookie, so why not make them work for it. Rather than just giving it up every time a man walks our way and says a couple nice things. His actions should show you that it’s not only about “divide and conquer” if you know what I mean. It’s about having a relationship with you and then making it to the point where he is worthy of getting “some.” It should be more than shopping sprees and vacations every other month. The relationship should amount to something and have substance before you give the cookie.

Some women use their power to take advantage and get what they want. They aren’t looking for a serious relationship so they’ll use the cookie to have the man splurge on them. The man falls for it, thinking that any day now they will get in those pants. We have the ability to say no to sex, to make men wait, and use our vagina’s in powerful ways. So why not?
