Swinging Success: ScHoolboy Q And His Lucrative Journey Beyond the Mic

ScHoolboy Q has been making some extra cash in his secondary venture, and it has proven to be lucrative. How profitable has golf been for Hanley? The rap artist can now relax and step away from rapping because of how financially rewarding it is.

ScHoolboy Q’s Meteoric Rise And Subsequent Retreat

ScHoolboy Q, also known as Quincy Matthew Hanley, burst onto the scene in 2014 with his debut.

According to the Grammy’s, Hanley was so talented that he came out of the gate smoking. His album, “Oxymoron,” hit number one on the Billboard 100. In 2014 and 2016, the artist garnered two Grammy nominations. Following the release of his album in 2019, fans saw far less of the artist for some time until the recent release of his “Blue Lips” record.

Artistic Philosophy

In a recent interview, ScHoolboy Q opened up about his musical journey, offering fascinating insights into his approach to making music. He expressed his desire to deliver substantial depth in his work. For him, quality is more important than quantity.

“When it comes to music, I don’t look at it as like, ‘Oh, you have to drop every year. I do what I want because I move off peace and my experiences.”

As ScHoolboy Q so passionately stated, he only includes what is authentic (sourced from experience). In his words, “If I bring nothing to the table that comes from my life, I don’t feel I should put it out.”

ScHoolboy Q Moves From Mic To Tee

When someone with such amazing talent takes a break, people start to wonder where else they could be directing their energy. For Hanley’s been immersing himself in golf.

Golf isn’t new to ScHoolboy Q, and he has expressed that he grew up watching his family golf. For him, golfing started in earnest as a means of achieving mental well-being and evolved into much more.

According to the ScHoolboy Q, golf has had a profound impact on his life. Golf has proven to be both a therapeutic and lucrative pursuit.

As a source notes, “He was funding his time between new rap releases with money he made from golf.” That is pretty fascinating.

Dismantling Stereotypes

Why is it relevant? It is crucial to understand that performers and artists cannot be generalized as one homogenous entity. The individuals in question are ordinary people who possess a particular skill that they opt to employ to inspire or entertain others. Being a performer at one point doesn’t make someone a performer indefinitely. People do whatever works for them.

Some things weren’t working for ScHoolboy Q in the industry. It is also noted that he turned down endorsement deals because of discriminatory practices. A loss of deals equates to financial losses, whereas golf provided him with cash inflow and inner tranquility. In his words, “I was able to relax for five years. I made a lot of money off rap, but golf helped me a lot.”

Undoubtedly, golfing seems like a mutually beneficial option.

The Intersection of Artistry and Personal Pursuits in Hip-Hop

What does one do with this information? Sharing such information provides insight, enlightening those outside the industry to what is and is not genuine. This fosters a deeper understanding of artistry and the inner workings of the industry. Such knowledge enables outsiders to observe things with greater clarity. Knowledge is a principal tenant of hip-hop.

Rooting For ScHoolboy Q:

May ScHoolboy Q find success in all his pursuits. If he comes back to music, he will have a fan base ready to receive whatever he’s dropping.

Schoolboy Q Features In Tiger Woods Nike Golf Commercial

ScHoolboy Q is as passionate about golf as anybody in hip-hop can be. For his love of golf, Nike invited Q to appear in an advertisement highlighting Tiger Woods’ journey to the mountaintop.

Moreover, the commercial aired during round one of the Masters on Thursday (Apr 7).

“What would you be willing to do to chase your dream,” the Los Angeles-born rapper asks as he plays his first shot. “Would you be willing to follow it to a place you’re not welcome?”

Similarly, afterward, the ad displays Tiger successfully overcoming injuries to win five Masters Tournaments.

“Would you open doors for people like me? For people like us,” Q says directly to Tiger. “It isn’t just about golf; it’s about succeeding against all odds.”

Schoolboy Q Draws Inspiration From Tiger Woods’s Talent

In addition, thanks to Tiger Woods, ScHoolboy Q represents a generation of Black golfers who are inspired to play the sport.

“Coming from where I come from, the life that I had, I never thought about playing golf,” the Top Dawg Entertainment artist has said during the 2022 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. “I got into it, and it changed my mental; it let me learn myself as a person.”

“Like, this is why certain things in my life are going bad, or certain things are going good, because of the attitude thing,” the artist added. “It fixed my attitude in life. It fixed a whole lot of things about me in life.”

Since he’s now a master golfer, ScHoolboy Q will be thinking about the Masters throughout the weekend. As Tiger Woods returns from a severe leg injury, he sustained in a car accident in 2021.

Music-wise, Q has also dropped his “Soccer Dad” single on April 6, which could launch his next album.

Overall, we at FMHipHop would like to extend our congratulations to Schoolboy Q for his appearance in the Nike Golf commercial. Also, as you go after your dreams, we wish you nothing but the best.

Schoolboy Q Has Showed New Material on Twitch

Schoolboy Q Has Teased Fans with His New Material on Twitch

During a Twitch stream, Schoolboy Q has presented his new material. Part of the snippet might still be available on YouTube; however, the whole stream is not available, and fans can’t share any recordings.

Instruments

Schoolboy Q has presented four songs during the stream. Some material from the presentation is pure instrumentals; others already have lyrics. The pure beats sound interesting, reference jazz, and mainly use the piano instruments for harmonics. My Shazam also identified some of them as “Tree Meditations I: Birch” by Jacco Lamfers and “Something in the Milk Ain’t Clean” by Alvin Mills Project. Some other Schoolboy Q’s new no-lyrics beats reminded me of “lofi hip hop radio- beats to relax/study to” on YouTube.

Lyrics

Mentioned beats begin and end the available part of the stream on YouTube. In the middle, there’s Schoolboy Q. “With a pistol in [his] pocket,” Schoolboy Q turns jazz session into a block party. Meanwhile, calling himself a God and getting a “call about some money.” Celebration of life suddenly turns into organ solo; 30 seconds later, recordings of cop conversations come in.

The second full song on YouTube’s part of the stream talks about police brutality. In the beginning, Schoolboy Q says the name of the most famous N.W.A. song. Schoolboy Q’s track talks about treatment provided to People of Color by law enforcement. The song expands to a general conversation of the system putting people in conditions where they sometimes have no choice but to end up getting harsh punishment.

The tense of the second song is slowed down by mentioned lo-fi instrumental solo. In the end, Schoolboy states he’s “better than everybody,” and the stream ends (or at least YouTube’s part of it).

While waiting for new Schoolboy Q’s material to be officially released, you can read our retrospective view on Blank Face.

Blank Face LP Turns 5 Today

THe Oxymoron rapper ScHoolboy Q released a classic five years ago today

Blank Face LP is criminally underrated.

5 years ago today, TDE rapper ScHoolboy Q released one of the best rap albums of 2016, Blank Face LP.

This was after a long list of promotional teasers, singles and performances.

On June 14, 2016, ScHoolboy Q revealed that his next album would be titled Blank Face LP.

In addition, he unveiled what was thought to be the album’s cover art. The artwork makes use of the infamous Crying Jordan meme, with his face blurred out.

On June 16, ScHoolboy Q released the “cover art” for the deluxe edition of the album, which features US presidential candidate Donald Trump with his face blurred.

However, a few days later, ScHoolboy revealed that he was trolling his fans and later unveiled the official album cover

On June 24, ScHoolboy Q released the short film, titled By Any Means.

Later that month, ScHoolboy Q released Tookie Knows II, the continuation of his short film By Any Means.

Finally, on July 11, Schoolboy Q released the third installment to his mini-film series, titled Black THougHts (Pt. 3)

The album was supported by two singles, Groovy Tony and THat Part ( ft. Kanye West). The single version of Groovy Tony is different from the album version as there is an outstanding Jadakiss verse, along with another verse from Q on the album version.

The album was released on July 8, 2016.

From beginning to end, the album is a whirlwind of hard west coast gangsta rap. Blaring guitars and heavy bass starts the project out with “TorcH”. An almost bone-chilling performance from Q and Vince Staples on “Ride Out”. A smooth and introspective cut from ScHoolboy and SZA on “Neva CHange”. The dark and gritty ending to the album with “Tookie Knows II”.

Everything about the album is well-placed and produced. Q is the star of his own world, floating over tracks with his signature off-the-wall cadences and flows. Above all, his story of pain, struggle and survival  is sprinkled throughout the entire project.

Blank Face LP Is ScHoolboy Q’s magnum opus and a modern day classic, not just for rap but for west coast music. Moreover, Blank Face LP was critically acclaimed when it hit the scene back in 2016. However, commercial success did  not come until much later.

Following release, “THaT Part” went on to dominate radio as a song of the summer, going double platinum and being nominated for Best Rap Performance at the 2017 Grammys. In addition, Blank Face LP was nominated for the Best Rap Album category, but lost to Chance the Rapper’s “Coloring Book”.

Blank Face LP will go down in history as a project that should have gotten more praise when released. Hopefully, the birthday of this classic album will have people go back and listen to how great Blank Face is.

Happy 5th Birthday Blank Face LP!

ScHoolboy Q Jokingly Tells Kendrick Lamar to Drop New Music

ScHoolboy Q is reminding Kendrick what fans want

It’s no secret that ScHoolboy Q on Twitter is pure entertainment. Similarly, it’s no secret that fans are sick and tired of waiting for Kendrick Lamar’s next album.

So, with the duo being buddies/labelmates, it’s not uncommon for fans to invade Q’s Twitter replies pleading for help.

Yesterday, he innocently tweeted “I feel good today.” The tweet was quickly met with a fan responding, “Tell Kendrick to drop then.” In good spirits, Q obliged.

Will it actually help?

Since Kendrick Lamar hasn’t dropped a studio album since 2017’s DAMN., fans are getting desperate. Even LeBron James has been putting in work on social media to convince Lamar to return to the scene with new music.

ScHoolboy Q

ScHoolboy Q’s Twitter feed is mostly for laughs, but fans will naturally be hopeful that his tweet could make something happen.

Aside from dealing with his friend’s music, Q also noted that he will be dropping more music. Hopefully the wait for his music isn’t quite as brutal as the wait for Lamar’s.

Whenever either of the two Black Hippy members finally decide to drop, we’ll keep you posted.

‘Stolen Youth LP’ by Vince Staples and Larry Fisherman: Retrospective Review

Ramona Park rapper Vince Staples says he’s releasing two albums this year, the first single of which will be coming out on June 18th.

With that, it’s a perfect time to revisit one of his many terrific projects from the past decade.  While Summertime ’06 is undoubtedly Vince’s masterpiece, we want to take it back further and explore his team up with Mac Miller, the phenomenal Stolen Youth LP.

Mac Miller dons his producer alter-ego, Larry Fisherman, to bring perfect beat selection for Vince Staples’ first big mixtape.  Simply put, this project is magic, a perfect example of a rapper and producer match made in heaven.  Mac shedding his frat-rap shell just as Vince decides to make his official entrance into the game makes for flawless chemistry between Vince’s raps and Mac’s music.  Mac’s production is hazy and controlled, yet hard and erratic.  Vince excellently juxtaposes this almost psychedelic atmosphere with his sober and jaded delivery.  From the moment it begins, we know we’re in for it.

“Live from delusion…”

That first line in the intro track is all you need to prepare yourself, immediately casting you into a world of danger and uncertainty.  Fisherman sets a heavenly and open atmosphere for Vince describing his surrounding hell. Fittingly, the final line of the song, “The fear in me is gone/You can hear it in the song while you listenin'” is the perfect bar to introduce the rest of the album.  Vince is only 19, but as the album title suggests, his youth has completely vanished.  His delivery is tired but hungry, worn down by his surroundings.

“Live and die by this gun”

The third track, Heaven, featuring Hardo and Mac Miller, is where the project really comes into itself, atmospherically.  Mac’s verse demonstrates just how much he understands working with Vince.  While avoiding the gun talk, he matches the disillusioned and resigned energy that Vince brings to the whole record.  Concurrently, Vince sets aside his tougher talk and reflects on lost friends and opportunities, saying “I think a better tomorrow is what I’m trying to make.”  While he normally speaks from a hardened shell that’s given up on good, this lyric reveals the true person behind the rapper.

As a result, Vince’s verse in Heaven is the perfect transition to Guns and Roses.  In some of the smartest writing of his career, Vince tells three different stories, one per verse.   He uses the relaxed and somewhat playful beat to perform with less inner tension and more reflection.  A break from the warzone atmosphere of the rest of the album, Vince sits back and tells the stories, knowing that they all can only end with guns and roses, “the two weapons of war.”

“When I die, please don’t let mama cry, Cause she know it had to be him or I”

The fifth track, Back Sellin’ Crackis the heart of the album.  Fisherman brings an atmospheric, hectic, yet beautiful and weary beat, reminiscent of the vibes of Kendrick Lamar’s earlier works.  In conjunction, Vince uses the space to expand on the album’s themes.  His callous ready-to-die attitude is exemplified in the hook, “killing for the karma, but living for my mama.”  Vince’s performance on both of his verses and the hook is both frantic and patient.  Finally, the whole cut is brought home by ScHoolboy Q, in one of the strongest verses in his career.  If you need any convincing to listen to this LP, this song is the one to do it.

The seventh track, Killin Y’all, featuring Ab-Soul,  is another essential pillar of the entire record.  Soul and Staples have great chemistry, making Vince bring out one of his hardest verses on here.  Vince dares you to “Aim at the head when you fuck with God, Jehova,” one of the many delightfully sacrilegious lyrics on this project, contributing to the complete lack of religion and structure in the world of Vince’s description.

“Never gave a dollar to the pastor”

Vince is nothing if not honest, and Thought About You is his most honest outing on the whole record.  He raps his regrets, hopes, and overall cynical view that things likely won’t get better.  Lastly, he addresses his ex-girlfriend in the third verse.  Though a thematic contrast from the rest of the album, it reveals the person behind the murderous lyrics while giving purpose to the song’s title.

On the penultimate track, Sleep, Vince and Mac treat us to a posse cut featuring themselves, Ab-Soul, and Da$h.  The beat is high energy and each MC comes in with full intensity.  Mac brings one of the most idiosyncratic verses of his career, followed by Vince ending the song with a nice KO verse.  Though, the most fun song on the album, it never strays from the overall energy of the rest of the LP.

After this cut, Vince wraps up nicely with the outro.  It’s one of the only moments in the project in which he acknowledges his prowess as a rapper, a huge turning point for him.  The making of this mixtape is the beginning of Vince truly rapping as a passion and not just a side hustle.  Through making Stolen Youth LP, Vince came in as a shell of a teenager who’d abandoned hope, and leaves as a fully equipped MC.

“Here to tell the world”

Give Stolen Youth LP a listen if you get the chance.  In the best ways possible, it feels like a low budget 90’s movie like True Romance, made purely out of passion for the craft.  This is both Vince Staples rapping at his A-Game and some of Mac Miller’s finest work, both on beats and bars.  It demonstrates the ability that two talented friends have to bring the best out of each other for the sake of music, the culture, and self-improvement.  At ten tracks, its a nearly flawless modern gangster rap album from a perspective that Hip-Hop has long needed.  Major applause to Vince Staples and the late great Mac Miller.

Stolen Youth LP Rating: Gold

Schoolboy Q lands New Role In Animated Series

Schoolboy Q the Actor?

Los Angeles rapper Schoolboy Q is trying something a little new: acting. The “Collard Greens” rapper is confirmed to voice an animated version of himself in upcoming series called The Freak Brothers.

According to Deadlinethe series based on The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Created by Gilbert Shelton, this underground cult comic follows three stoner characters. After smoking a magical strain of weed in 1969, they are transported 50 years into the future (2020), bringing their 60’s San Fransico demeanor to the modern world.

In addition to being a part of an animated series, SchoolBoy Q also joins a great cast!

Woody Harrelson is voicing laid-back Freewheelin’ Franklin Freek, John Goodman to voice man-child Fat Freedy Freekowtski, and Pete Davidson is voicing Phineas T. Phreakers. As well, Adam Devine and Blake Anderson (Workaholics). Devine and Blake will play Chuck and Charlie. Two weed savants on the hunt for the next side-hustle with hearts of gold. With all these male-dominant energies, we should have some femininity! Hence, the series will also star Tiffany Haddish as Kitty. Also, La La Anthony will present herself as a social-advocate lawyer– Gretchen.

Furthermore, Season 1 includes eight episodes that have wrapped production already. The studios behind Rick & Morty, Starburns Industries, and Pure Imagination organized the animation. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a broadcaster/streamer yet.

Again, the cast seems to be pretty excited for the series. Particularly Anthony, which she views as her dream role by saying:

“I have been into cartoons and animation for as long as I can remember and have dreamed of having the opportunity to voice an animated series. And to share the screen with some of the greatest comedians of our time is amazing. I’m excited to be a part of this project and can’t wait for fans to see the show.”

Harrelson adding, “This show is really funny, it’s pure entertainment. If you’re a stoner it’s probably a little funnier, but either way, it’s a great ride.” Davidson also comments, “When you can do a cartoon about weed, you do it. Then you wake up the next day and call your team and make sure you weren’t high and this is a real thing.” Then Haddish adds, “I’ve always wanted to play a pussy. There’s nothing funny about recording in a closet, I’ve never wanted to be in the closet and I try to live my life outside of it.”

It sounds pretty funny and entertaining. Even though the new episodes are not out yet, including the one with Schoolboy Q. You can check out the few episodes on youtube. Better yet, you can watch one below. See it as an appetizer before the main course.

ScHoolBoy Q and Travis $cott Release New Track and Visual “CHopstix”

Salutations FM Trendsetters and FM Hip Hop Heads!  “The Marathon still continues..” Despite the fall of the late great Nipsey Hussle (Rest in Peace), the West Coast still has a hope in this music game.  A talented artist that came out with a collective, in which came out the same time Nipsey Hussle came out, is back on the music scene.  Top Dawg Entertainment‘s own ScHoolBoy Q released a new music video and banger, featuring Billboard Award nominee Travis $cott.CHopstix” was released as a new track this past Monday on all social media and music outlets.  The banger was then released as an official music video via ScHoolBoy Q‘s VEVO/Youtube channel on Wednesday.

The video was directed by well known Chicago-born videographer Nabil Elderkin (bka Nabil).  The director has a prior history with working with Travis $cott and his collaborations, including SZA‘s “Love Galore” and Travis $cott‘s “YOSEMITE“.  Nabil also worked with fellow Top Dawg artist Kendrick Lamar for his highly anticipated and controversial “DNA” music video.  So you already know the videography is going to be lit.

The song, produced by DJ Dahi (Drake‘s “Worst Behavior“) is already certified FM Phenomenal! The instruments in the track embeds the whole “chopsticks” double montage, from the plucking of the strings to the slight touch of the keys in the beat.  Not to mention the snares and 808s keep your head moving for days. This is definitely a song I would keep on repeat.  Oh, don’t worry, ScHoolBoy Q explains in the first verse why the song is called “CHopstix“.

The video is in classic black and white, around roaring 20s to 1930s-ish burlesque era.  Travis $cott is the conductor of a beautiful orchestra and ScHoolBoy Q is a magical host, who has his eyes on a beautiful woman in the audience. The costumes were amazing, but I did not expect anything less from the highly credited director.  The video was so authentic and complimented the track. Make sure you check it out below:
