Bootsy Collins Announces Compilation Album: Funk Not Fight

Funk legend and Cincinnati icon Bootsy Collins has put together a brand new record with the help of some fellow soul-train trailblazers.

Bootsy Collins Presents Funk not Fight

Bootsy Collins is best known for his prolific work with the bass guitar alongside James Brown. Throughout the 1970s, Collins made himself a household name with his unique vocals and masterful skills with the strings. Now, this innovator is using his influence to promote funk to a whole new generation.

Funk Not Fight is a collaborative project featuring impressive modern jazz/funk artists like Lettuce, Buckethead, and Zapp. In addition to this, relative newcomers like Steve Lacy, Tommy Davidson, and Triggy are set to make an appearance.

The album announced on Collin’s 71st birthday, will also bring in funk fanatics from around the globe. Talented singers, rappers, and poets are encouraged to submit a virtual audition to possibly make it on Funk Not Fight. For any funk music enthusiast or any musician who loves and respects the art form, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance.

Even those who don’t land a spot on the album have the chance to work with Bootsy for his 2023 FUNKTROPOLIS Metaverse project and appear on a Fortnite Iconic Radio playlist.

Making the Band

The ‘Id Rather Be With You’ artist has always been an avid supporter of newer talent. Just last year, he collaborated with Silk Sonic and Anderson Paak for their hit single ‘After Last Night’. Before then, he joined Kali Uchis and Tyler the Creator for another successful track ‘After The Storm’. Notably, Bootsy Collins makes it a priority to pour into industry freshmen.

‘Funk Not Fight’ is set to be released in association with Syncr and The Bootsy Collins Foundation. The album is also partnered with Fox Soul, Fortnite Iconic Radio, Spotify, Apple, Retro Fitness, and The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. 100% of profits made will go directly towards “initiatives that are in need of financial support, that are dedicated to helping turn the tide of violence and unrest in our communities”.

While an official release date is yet to be revealed, Collins released a teaser single yesterday to drum up some hype. You can listen to ‘Funk Not Fight’ below:

In accordance with ‘Funk Not Fight’ and his birthday bash, Collins recently announced his new Apple Music radio show. A particularly special episode honoring funk not fight and Collin’s 71st featured guests like Morris Day, Bruno Mars, Dr. Dre, Flea, Snoop Dogg, and Sheila E. If ‘Bad Habit’ is a playlist favorite, look out for an upcoming episode with Steve Lacy.

If you’re a talented fan of funk and a fan of Bootsy, enter your work here.

Anderson .Paak Hits Milestone With Release of ‘An Evening With Silk Sonic’ Album

Anderson .Paak is undoubtedly all smiles today due to the sales from Silk Sonic’s hit album, An Evening With Silk Sonic.

.Paak’s Fan Favorites

On November 12th, fans of Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars got a delightful treat with the release of An Evening With Silk Sonic. Admittedly fans were growing impatient waiting for the album’s release. Nevertheless, the anticipation built with the release of each single: ‘Leave the Door Open’, ‘Skate,’ and ‘Smoking out the Window.’

So, upon release of An Evening with Silk Sonic, fans didn’t waste time procuring the album for their collection.

A Slight Distaste is Not Always a Bad Thing.

However, not everyone was bustling with satisfaction with the album. But there is, of course, a rational explanation.

Yahoo news correspondents are reporting,

“All over social media, folks were upset this highly anticipated meeting of funky minds only yielded nine cuts.”

Fans wanted more.

However, although fans initially appeared a little disheartened, they didn’t cease showing love.

And .Paak feels the warmth as album sales push the duo straight to the top.

.Paak is Celebrating

According to Hiphopdx,

“HITS Daily Double is reporting An Evening with Silk Sonic will debut at No. 2 this week with 102,000 total album-equivalent units earned.”

And that’s big news for .Paak.

Why? The album’s debut marks a historic win in his book.

Silk Sonics Roots

This is not  .Paak’s and Mar’s first collab. Some might not know this, but the pair did features together before joining as a silky-smooth duo. As a source notes,

“The veteran artists once toured together and collaborated on Chic’s ‘It’s About Time‘ and Paak’s ‘Ventura‘.”

But it wasn’t until the spring of this year the two decided to create a formal collaborative.

March 2021 marks the birth of Silk Sonic. And within a month of forming, the Duo was doing the thing. They were riding their melodic stylings straight to the top and into the hearts of fans.

According to allmusic.com

“Leave the Door Open” topped the Hot 100 in April” of that same year.”

Silk Sonic, Legends in the Making

One can say the move to unite formally was more than genius.

And the duo continues to please. They make creating hits look like a breeze.

Now current album sales are demonstrating to .Paak, what can happen when two greats come together. The sales have helped .Paak reach a new milestone.

“With the release of ‘An Evening with Silk Sonic,’ “Anderson .Paak notably received his highest first-week sales in his career.”

Turning Heads

When people stop and notice your efforts, you become sure you are doing something right.

And the word is, Silk Sonic is even getting nods of approval from hip hop legends.

Reportedly Ghost Face Killah is digging everything Silk Sonic is putting down. And he is super hype about the possibility of doing a collab with the Duo.

In his words,

“I wish I could get to them and talk to them and be like, ‘Yo let’s do this  s**t. Let’s do a six-song project just for the f*** of it.”

And so, with any luck, the pair will put Ghostface Killah on.

Today congratulations go out to these heavy hitters. And let’s keep the hits coming. Listen to the album below

An Evening With Silk Sonic

The two legends met and bonded after Mr. Paak opened for Bruno Mars during his 24k Magic World Tour. Mr. Mars would later announce the group Silk Sonic in February of 2021. Initially, the album was to be debut back on October 8, the same day as Bruno Mars’ birthday.  Unfortunately, the band announced they’d postponed it to November 12, much to fans’ disappointment.

More On Smokin Out The Window

The song is set to drop on Friday this week, and I know everyone’s hoping they don’t postpone this one too.

Here’s what fans have to say about the exciting news!

Silk Sonic’s “Skate” Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Chart-Topper

Silk Sonics silky and smooth single “Skate” is heating up the R&B and Hip-Hop Charts.

After Silk Sonics chart-topping single, “Leave the Door Open,” fans were looking for more. And on July 30, Sonic responded with the release of the hot summer single “Skate.” Now, according to a recent Billboard.com article, “Skate” is just what fans wanted, debuting at number four on the R&B and Hip-Hop charts. But those are not the only charts that the single is burning up. According to contributor Trevor Anderson, the single is number fourteen on the Billboard charts for all genres.

Silk Sonic’s success with Skate is no surprise.

Making hits is a signature of Bruno Mars and Anderson. Paak. Both Bruno and Anderson, collaborators of Silk Sonic, are chart-toppers. As Anderson notes, “Skate” becomes the former’s eighth top 10 hit on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and the latter’s second.” And after the colossal success of “Leave the Door Open,” there was no expectation for anything less for the “Skate” single.

Silk Sonic is a match made in heaven.

Bruno and Anderson came together to form this divine duo in February of 2021. And in March, they were off and running with their first hit single. The pair is working on a full-length LP. The LP is appropriately titled An Evening with Silk Sonic. There is not much news on the LP’s release—Genius.com lists September as an expected release date. And if Genius.com is correct, both tracks, “Leave the Door Open,” and “Skate” will appear on the LP.

Sonic invokes major nostalgia with “Skate.”

Silk Sonic hit it out of the park with the retro-feel and sultry lyrics of “Leave the Door Open.” And with “Skate,” the pair did it again. The smooth lyricism invokes a sense of nostalgia, taking listeners back to a time where skating was everything and rinks were popping.

Although the entire tracklist of Sonic’s LP is not confirmed, with the success of the first two singles, the LP is sure to be fire. So if you haven’t heard the release “Skate” yet, be sure to check out one of the hottest songs of summer 2021.

#FMSpotlight: Grammy-Nominated Mixer & Engineer John Kercy

Behind every great musician is a meticulous mixer and engineer who lays down the foundation for their records to come to life. And one individual who wholeheartedly resides behind this statement is John Kercy

The Grammy-nominated mixer and engineer defines himself as hard-working, focused, and passionate about music and grooves. Moreso, he keeps his head down and does the work.

Music was introduced to Kercy through his father, who, at the time, was an electronics engineer and technician. Because of his dad’s involvement in the music scene, he was always surrounded by instruments and technical devices. Also, consoles because his father’s friends always came over. Naturally, Kercy fell into it. He took the producing route before realizing that his real passion sprawled in manipulating sounds and conveying emotions through various engineering techniques.

One accomplishment of his was bringing his parents to the GRAMMYS.

“Music wasn’t necessarily something they saw me doing. They envisioned me being a doctor, civil engineer. When I was able to take them to the GRAMMY’s, it was that reassurance that he’ll be good.”

John Kercy
John Kercy

His inspirations include Bruce Swedien (Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones), his close friend/mentor, Fabian Marasciullo, and Jimmy Douglass (Timbaland).

When working on a record, he needs his speakers, which have been by his possession for 11 years.

In terms of mixing, he aims to find the soul of the record. Sometimes it’ll be a groove or bassline or singer. His goal is to accentuate the song’s core elements—adding specific ear candy to make people feel immersed in it.

“When people press play, I want them to hear some sort of emotion. To get lost in the record,” he continues.

The majority of the songs he’s worked on have spoken to him.

He says, “If it [a track] doesn’t spark any ideas in me, I turn it down because it’s a disservice to the artists and producer. Emotion is a vessel in music.”

John Kercy
John Kercy

He enjoyed bringing two songs to life: “Floods” by Lucky Daye and “Like I Want You” by Giveon

Kercy adds, “When I heard the songs, it sparked something in me to go in on them. The outcome speaks for itself.”

For others looking to become engineers or mixers, Kercy suggests that they should be tech-savvy, musicians, and have people skills. He also gives them this word of advice:

“Do it for the right reasons. It takes practice. If you don’t love it, you won’t make it. You have to have a passion for music and engineering.”

If he could go back to the start of his career, he’d tell himself:

“It’s going to be a long road. No matter what, keep going and remember the love for the music.”

Outside of music, he enjoys motorsports and cooking. In the future, he’d like to work alongside Bruno Mars. The star engineer lists “Leave The Door Open” by Bruno MarsAnderson .Paak and “You’re Mine Still” Yung Bleu and Drake as his favorite songs.

About John Kercy

Kercy has worked with an abundance of talented musicians ranging from Khalid to 50 Cent. He is R&B’s best-kept secret. Most recently, his work was praised on Giveon‘s “Heart Break Anniversary,” which is now certified platinum.

Kercy plays a very pivotal part in the creation of a hit record, and he prides himself on his ability to add emotion and texture to a record and then translating the emotion of the record to the common ear. He is currently working on Lucky Daye and India Shawn‘s upcoming project.

Chloe Bailey Leaves Cardi B ‘Blushing’ Over Her Rendition of “Be Careful”

Since creating her own Instagram account, Chloe Bailey has been on a roll! And her latest cover has “Bodak Yellow” rapper blushing…

This past weekend Chloe Bailey dropped yet another smashing cover. This time the “Do It” singer tapped into Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy album track “Be Careful.” Leaving the rapper sending admiration over the rendition. As a result, the Bronx rapper took to social media to praise Bailey for her R&B rendition of the single. “This is soo beautiful got me smiling from ear to ear and blushing maa hard,” the rapper tweeted. “You see this how I thought I sounded on the track.”

Again, “Be Careful” is Cardi B’s third single off her Grammy award-winning album Invasion of Privacy, which also peaked #1 on the Billboard 200.

Since Chloe x Halle decided to create their own Instagram accounts, Chloe has released several covers that include Bruno Mars & Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open,” The Weeknd’s “Earned It,” and Yung Bleu’s “You’re Mine’s Still.” Which caught the singer’s attention, proclaiming that they should do a song.

Obviously Chloe is killing the game right now and everybody should be taking pointers. It was just a while back Mathew Knowles (Beyonce’s father) was shutting down claims as the singer being the next Beyonce’. With her charismatic charm, sultry voice, and being a considerate triple threat (singing, dancing, and acting! What can this girl not do!).

Chloe Bailey may not be the next Bey, but she could definitely be the next star on the rise.
