The Kid LAROI Has More Monthly Listeners Than Kendrick Lamar

17-year-old star, The Kid LAROI (@thekidlori) has taken the music industry by storm. He’s achieved Tik Tok infamy, rubbed shoulders with Drake, and now he’s surpassed Kendrick Lamar on monthly Spotify listeners. Back in 2018, he was just “14 with a dream” and now he is kicking off 2021 with over 25.5 million Spotify listeners.

Kendrick disappointed his fans in 2020 when fans’ dreams of a new album arriving were crushed due to the COVID pandemic. Lamar hasn’t released an album since DAMN. in 2017, which factors into the artists’ monthly listener count ebbs, but LAROI still has him beat by over a million listeners. The whole ordeal has sent Twitter into a frenzy, and LAROI’s name has been trending ever since.

The Kid’s Rise to Fame

Real name Sydney Kamilaroi, the rapper put out his first mixtape called F*CK LOVE in 2020. Critics said the production and features made it flashy enough to be a debut album. LAROI was mentored by the late Juice WRLD and the two covered the song “Reminds Me” by Kim Petras. This December, about a year since Juice’s passing, the song was released as the single “Reminds Me Of You”.

The young Australian opened up for Juice’s Australian tour in November, which turned out to be his final shows before he tragically died at age 21. The two were very close. Juice even went to LAROI’s 16th birthday in Greece last year.

“It’s still weird to think about,” he told Kingsmill. “It’s still fresh on everyone’s mind. I would hope that I’m making him proud and everyone down here loves and misses him still. It’s still pretty unreal.”

LAROI said to Billboard over the summer that his “big brother” Juice inspired him as a recording artist and how his posthumous collaborations and releases ensure that his legacy will live on.

Everyone is eager to see what is next for The Kid. He’s even got the likes of Justin Bieber and Post Malone following him on Instagram.
