10 Labelmates Who Became Enemies

Kodak Black and Jackboy have had beef on and off the past few years.  Just recently, Jackboy responded with a diss track to Kodak’s EP, Closure.  Jackboy and Kodak were “best friends” and Jackboy is signed to Sniper Gang, Kodak’s record label.  This is not a strange thing in hip-hop.  There have been numerous times where rappers on the same label have dissed each other.  Let’s look at some of them.

10. Megan Thee Stallion and 1501

Megan Thee Stallion and 1501 Certified Entertainment have been feuding for a while now.  She claimed the label was preventing her from releasing new music.  She filed a lawsuit against Carl Crawford, head of 1501 claiming she was only paid $15,000 by them.  Carl Crawford claims Megan started to keep her financial information from the label after doing a deal with Roc Nation.  He said that was a tactic to try to get him to renegotiate her deal.  Recently, Meg was at a concert where she put her middle finger up during a song where the lyrics are “I’m the 1501 queen”.  Their beef is still unsettled.

9. Kanye West and Consequence

Consequence was already apart of Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. music label.  He appeared on tracks with Ye on The College Dropout and Late Registration.  After his absence in the G.O.O.D. Music Cypher at the 2010 BET Awards, Consequence made a diss track towards Kanye called “Man Purses”.  He claims Kanye did not help him with his second album with the label causing him to feel that they weren’t brothers.  Later, Consequence claimed that he wrote a lot of Kanye’s lyrics on The College Dropout.  In 2015, they patched things up as Consequence worked on Kanye’s album, The Life of Pablo.

8. Drake and Tyga

Tyga and Drake were both on the label Young Money for quite some years.  In 2014, Tyga called Drake “fake” when he did the cover story for VIBE magazine.  He mentioned he didn’t get along with Young Money, Nicki Minaj, or Drake.  Tyga adds that he likes Drake’s music, but just doesn’t like him as a person.  Chris Brown is his close friend and Drake, and Chris Brown were feuding at the time.

Drake responded by liking a few of Blac Chyna’s pictures on Instagram, the mother of Tyga’s son.  Tyga then took a few shots at Drake on “Make It Work”.  Drake stayed on Instagram and posted a photo with Kylie Jenner, Tyga’s fling at the time.  Then Drake went to the booth to drop “6 PM in New York” that included some lines for “Rack City” rapper.  In 2016, Tyga said he and Drake were on good terms because of Kanye West.

7. Jeezy and Freddie Gibbs

Freddie Gibbs was signed to Jeezy’s CTE record label in 2010 after making the XXL Freshman list.  Two years later though, he revealed he was no longer with Jeezy.  He even put out a few diss tracks including “Real”.  Jeezy dropped his single “Therapy for My Soul” where he spoke on the situation with Freddie Gibbs.  He says he couldn’t trust Gibbs after he invested in him and adds that he isn’t “gangsta” at all.

After hearing the track, Gibbs hopped on Twitter to poke fun at the Atlanta rapper, saying BMF put him in a headlock and posted a video of Jeezy dancing.  Jeezy claims that when Freddie was with CTE, he put him on songs with T.I. and Eminem, took him on tour, and paid for his music videos.  When it was time to go to the labels to get Freddie a deal, no one wanted to sign him, so Jeezy cut ties with him over the phone.  Recently, Freddie said he is interested in clearing the air between them two.

6. Wale and Meek Mill

Meek Mill & Wale were leading the charge for the Maybach Music Group in the 2010s.  Along the way, Meek Mill felt that Wale was hating on him as his album was about to drop.  He went to Twitter to vent his frustrations about his D.C. labelmate.  Wale responded on Instagram with a photo and a lengthy caption stating he supports Meek but doesn’t feel Meek’s support.  The boss of MMG, Rick Ross, stepped in and said both artists were on the phone, and everything was “all love”.  A year later, Wale discussed Meek’s beef with Drake on The Breakfast Club where he said Meek brought a “pencil to a gun fight”.  Meek didn’t like that and let Wale know through an Instagram post as he berated him.  Rick Ross stepped in again and now the two continue to make millions together.

5. Gillie Da Kid and Lil Wayne

Gillie Da Kid and Lil Wayne were both on Cash Money Records.  He left the label in 2003 over disputes with money with label heads Birdman and Slim.  Lil Wayne decided to diss Gillie on the song “Problem Solver” in 2006.  Gillie retaliated by making statements about Wayne and Birdman being frauds in street DVDs.  He even appeared in some videos with Wayne’s Squad Up members who weren’t too happy with Lil Wayne either.  Gillie finally responded to “Problem Solver” with his own diss over the “Cannon” beat.  A beat Lil Wayne rapped over on his Dedication 2 mixtape with DJ Drama.  They traded diss songs once again after that.  Today, when they see each other, they greet each other and that’s about it.

4. Eminem and Royce da 5’9

In 1997, Eminem linked up with Royce da 5’9 to form the duo Bad Meets Evil.  They made a lot of songs together and Royce was on Eminem’s debut album, The Slim Shady LP.  Shortly thereafter, Royce’s manager made comments about Dr. Dre in 1999 that Dre didn’t like.  Dre cut ties with Royce and his manager leaving him and Eminem to be disconnected.  A few years later, Royce Da 5’9 gave Eminem a freestyle for the ‘Anger Management’ mixtape.  Eminem took one of Royce’s lines on the freestyle as a diss.  D12 dissed Royce and Royce dissed D12, which ultimately led to Proof and Royce fighting one night at a nightclub.  Proof was killed three years later, slowing down the beef.  They continued their beef on and off again, but today Eminem and Royce da 5’9 have no issues.

3. Cam’ron and Jay-Z

Dame Dash named Cam’ron president of Roc-A-Fella Records, to which Jay-Z was not aware of.  Jay-Z deleted Cam’ron’s verse on the song “One For Peedi Crakk”.  Cam’ron then decided to take Jay-Z’s verse off the “Oh Boy” remix.  Cam sent shots at Jay-Z on his song “Let Me Know” in 2000.  As Dame and Jay-Z were feuding, Cam’ron took Dame’s side.  He made another diss track at Hov called “You Got to Love It”.  After Jay-Z released his album, Kingdom Come, Cam’ron and Jim Jones dissed him again on “Kingdom Done”.  The beef continued for a while but was recently deaded.

2. Ice Cube and N.W.A.

Ice Cube was the lyrics to N.W.A., simply a poet.  He was smart too as he was the first one to scope out how Easy E was the only one getting paid.  Cube left the group and started his solo career, to which N.W.A. didn’t like.  They dissed him on their EP, “100 Miles and Runnin” and Cube retaliated on his song ‘Jackin For Beats’.  N.W.A fired back and that’s when Ice Cube made the infamous “No Vaseline”.  This attributed to the breaking up of N.W.A.

1. The Game and 50 Cent

When 50 Cent was brought in to help with The Game’s debut album, tension started to rise.  After helping write Game’s biggest singles on the album, 50 felt the label was focusing all their attention on Game after they pushed his album back.  The Game was on HOT 97 and said he was going to do a song with Nas, who at the time was beefing with 50 Cent.  A few days later, G-Unit went to HOT 97 and declared Game out of the group.  Game came down there while G-Unit was on the air and a shootout took place.  Game then disses 50 on “300 Bars N Runnin” and 50 retaliated with “Not Rich, Still Lyin”.  They went back and forth over the years, and they are still not cool today.

Tyga Apologizes For Controversial Music Video; Takes It Down

Tyga has apologized to Mexican Americans after receiving much backlash for his music video “Ay Caramba.” The “Rack City” rapper sat down with Los Angeles radio station Power 106 and Gil from the American Cholo podcast.

“I had no intentions of offending anybody…want to apologize to the Mexican community and my fans that are Mexican,” Tyga said. “I have a lot of Latin fans that are Puerto Rican, Dominican, that probably weren’t offended by this video, but my Mexican fans in L.A., there definitely was some that were offended.”

When the “Ay Caramba” controversy sparked, Tyga claimed to be confused about the hate. “I wasn’t making this video to be offensive, I was really making this video to be creative,” the artist explained.

Tyga later said that he drew his music video inspiration from the film “The Nutty Professor,” particularly from the character in a fat suit. “The character is just me in a fat suit…not even Mexican. This character was literally a reference…There’s a scene from [“The Nutty Professor” with a character in] the same kind of sweat suit on.”

Gil Responds To Tyga

Gil then added to the conversation, saying that the video did offend him. “I grew up my whole life in Mexican culture, being in L.A., so it’s kind of hard for me to separate the two.” He then asked Tyga if he would consider taking the video down. “If I feel like that’s right, then I don’t have a problem with that,” he said. He has since taken down the video. This is not the first time Tyga has dressed as a different “character” in his music videos.

Last month, he and YG released the music video for their song “Run.” Both rappers dressed up as white chicks, so many fans believed the two were poking fun at Kim and Khloe Kardashian.

YG And Tyga Dress Up As “White Chicks” In “Run” Music Video

This year we are entering a new era within the rap and hip-hop culture. YG and Tyga dressed up as “white chicks” in a new video teased for  YG’s single “Run” featuring Tyga, 21 savage, and Bia.

On Wednesday, June 22nd, YG took to his Instagram to tease the new music video to his song “Run”

In the video, YG is driving in a bright red Porsche busting out some moves as Tyga rides passenger. The only odd part about the clip was that YG and Tyga didn’t look like YG and Tyga. The two rappers were seen covered in White Chicks-style makeup, wearing all-black bumping to YG’s new track. Many fans believe the rappers were portraying Kim and Khloe Kardashian. YG as Khloe and Tyga as Kim as YG shouts, “Calabasas forever!” which happens to be the Kardashian’s hometown.

The clip sparked many opinions from fans as well as Shawn and Marlon Wayans from the 2004 comedy film, White Chicks. Twitter seems to find the short clip hysterical. One user @nniicoleeee tweeted“not me looking for tyga and yg and they the mfs inna car.” Another fan @KPkonfidential said, “boy YG & Tyga washed as fuck. tf are they doing?!”

https://twitter.com/KPkonfidential/status/1539725006749331456

According to Hip-Hop DX, back in February YG announced his forthcoming sixth record, Pray For Me by dropping off his “Scared Money” single with J. Cole and Moneybagg Yo. His single “Run” will hit streaming services on Friday, June 24th. It will most likely appear on the album as well.

In an interview with Power 106, YG discusses how he chooses his features.

“When I do the features I be doing, it’s always who would be unexpected or who I ain’t work with yet or who is really gonna do the record justice lyrically with bars… The music is just gonna be my truth, as far as my life right now… It’s just the growth of me, my headspace, what I’m on in life.”

The FMHip Hop Retro Review: Drake’s ‘Take Care’ (2011)

Take Care is undoubtedly one of Drake’s most successful albums to date.

The album was released November 15, 2011, and was his second LP. The delivery of this album became the catalyst for the cementation of his name and brand. Although his 2013 album, Nothing Was The Same, took the world by storm, its predecessor is still arguably his greatest work. The attention to detail is apparent, down to the sincere emotion of his heartfelt lyrics.

In October, Billboard commemorated Drake’s Take Care for withstanding 450 cumulative weeks on the Billboard 200, making him the third rapper to do so. With Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits, spending 550 weeks on the charts, and Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, spending 468 total weeks, he proves he is amongst the greatest to do it.

Drake is notably one of the greatest rap artists of our time. He trailblazed a lane of his own with his smooth vocals and, in a world where rap is a breeding ground for misogynistic lyrics, the Toronto rapper capitalized on his lover boy charm.

With the album celebrating its 10th anniversary of success, its only fitting we take a trip down memory lane. Here we are giving you the 6 God’s top six songs from this classic album.

Original Take Care Tracklist, Where is this Photo From? | Kanye to The
Drake celebrated Take Care’s 10th anniversary by sharing this handwritten track list of his second studio album. via Instagram(@champagnepapi)

The Top Six Tracks From Take Care

1. Marvin’s Room

Marvin’s Room is a fan favorite. The title is a reference to Marvin Gaye’s studio, popularly known as “Marvin’s Room”, where Drizzy recorded the track. Believe it or not, this song almost didn’t make the track list. Producer of the song, 40, convinced Drake to keep the track on the album following the track’s leak several months prior to the LP’s release.

Giving his signature polished and effortless vocals, this love turned sour track instantly became an anthem for the scorned lovers.

“I’m just saying you can do better,” sang Drake. The downtempo range created a congenial environment for drunk-calling our ex. With his unapologetic approach to overstepping boundaries, he really captured the essence of wanting that old thang back. Marvin’s Room opened doors to other R&B natives to jump in on the action. With covers by Chris Brown, JoJo, Teyana Taylor, and Jhené Aiko, this song proved its excellence.

2. Headlines

Drake debuted Headlines as the first single off the album. Drake’s hype train became a reality with this track. With the line, “The realest is on the rise, f*ck them other guys,” he gave fans a moment to realize the place he was gunning for in hip hop. This summer time jam provided the accelerated beat needed to really get a party going. Drake told Billboard:

“By no means is it the best song on my album, it’s really just the song for this moment, right now,” he said. “I always try to put forth a song with a message. A lot of people pick their single by what’s the strongest song. I don’t really do that. I like to make sure that the content is very relevant to right now.”

3. Take Care ft. Rihanna

With rumors of the two dating, this single came with a flirtatious vibe that sent the popular duo to the forefront of every convo. The Barbados fire-cracker is pop royalty and the Toronto rapper was on a steady climb, making for the perfect duet.

4. Crew Love ft. The Weeknd

A bromance was perfectly brought to life with this dynamic collaboration. Talks of groupie love are to be expected, especially from the charismatic charmer. The addition of The Weeknd gave a smooth essence to the arrogance this song brings.

“This ain’t no f*cking sing-along, so girl what you singing for,” is the perfect example of The Weeknd’s ability to deliver this rude but inviting line. They lovin’ the crew for sure with this one.

5. HYFR (Hell Yeah F*ckin Right) ft. Lil Wayne

The classic Drake and Lil Wayne team-up is one we are honored to receive. Anytime these two are on a track it is sure to be a banger. and “Hell Yeah F*ckin Right” was a banger indeed. This song is another alcohol-induced display of affection for his ex-lover.

“I learned Hennessey and enemies is one hell of a mixture,” Drizzy raps.

Conversely, this is a reoccurring theme in his work. Either way, this song gave us some upbeat rhymes contradictory to his usual melodic tunes.

6. The Motto ft Lil Wayne & Tyga

“The Motto” needs no intro. This track paraded the YOLO (You Only Live Once) train and awakened a time period for the rambunctious and unrestrained. Again, this Drake and Lil Wayne collaboration is why the two are amongst the greatest. With YMCMB labelmate Tyga, this song promoted the leisure seekers to emerge. The clubs kept this track in heavy rotation.

Whether you call him Drake, Drizzy, Champagne Papi, or Lover Boy, Drake is one of the greatest rappers of our time, maybe the greatest.

Tyga Domestic Assault Incident Update: Released on Bond

FMHipHop has just received an update on the Tyga domestic assault situation. Earlier this week, Micheal Stevenson, also known as the rapper Tyga, turned himself into police custody. His girlfriend had accused him of domestic assault. We have covered this incident in detail.

A Quick Recap

On the morning of October 11 at 3:00 am, Camaryn Swanson arrived at Tyga’s house. According to “someone close to Tyga,” Swanson was upset, screaming, and had arrived despite her boyfriend’s wishes. Other people inside the home report that Swanson’s behavior was so erratic that they believed her to be under the influence of some kind of drug. Despite this, Tyga allowed Swanson inside his home where the situation escalated. It is unknown what precisely the two were arguing over, but Swanson claims that Tyga refused to allow her to leave for several hours. During that time period, he struck her. Eventually, Swanson’s mother arrived to pick her up, which is when the police became involved.

In the following days, Swanson shared photos and videos of her injuries, causing the #camarynswanson to go viral over Instagram and Twitter. She has also denied allegations of her behavior and screaming. Regardless, this prompted Tyga to turn himself into police custody for questioning.

Tyga Released from Custody on Bail

Following his arrest on Tuesday, police have held the rapper in custody, no doubt to be questioned. He has yet to personally speak out on the situation, but so far it is hard to deny the photos and videos posted by his girlfriend. Tyga has agreed to pay a hefty bail of $50,000 and now has been temporarily freed from custody pending these very serious allegations. FMHipHop will continue to update as the situation progresses.

Domestic violence is a very serious issue. For more information, visit the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Their Resources Page provides a long list of potential places to seek help if you or someone you know is in need.

Tyga Turns Himself In After Domestic Assault Incident Against Ex-Girlfriend

Tyga was arrested on charges of domestic assault against an ex-girlfriend, Camaryn Swanson. The incident occurred yesterday morning of October 11, in the rapper’s home. Following the accusations of his alleged assault, Tyga turned himself to the LA Police Department.

Text messages and pictures of the rapper’s words and actions before and after the assault are displayed on TMZ and The Shade Room. His bond is currently at $50,000.

The Altercation

It is reported that Tyga’s ex came to his front door unannounced. Also, it is said that she had a highly disruptive attitude that led to her and him getting into an argument. This argument became physical, according to Camaryn, which led to her getting a bruised eye. She went to her social media accounts to share her side of the story. Along came a glimpse of her eye and blood on her sweater as evidence of what transpired early yesterday morning. After the altercation, a car was sent to pick up Camaryn, where she then proceeded to text Tyga about what he had done to her. Her response was:

“Hurts so much. I can’t believe this is how it has to end. Honestly, I’m so heartbroken and didn’t think you were ever capable of doing this to me.”

Also, according to her own account, she said:

“I didn’t show screaming or uninvited. When I tried to leave, he physically assaulted me and refused to let me leave for hours.”

We definitely hear more from both sides as the story continues to unfold.

Tyga’s Past Ex’s

The ‘Taste’ rapper has had a lot of fun with different women in recent years. A few to note are Kylie Jenner and Black Chyna. These ladies are both quite the trendsetters amid the controversy they have also had with Tyga. Someone can say that Tyga has terrible luck with women, and others can disagree. Still, one thing for sure is that he had well-known and highly followed women that have made him prevalent during his music career.

Lil Wayne Announces New Young Money Compilation Album Is on the Way

By Prince Hakeem

If you ask rapper, Lil Wayne, he’ll tell you that it’s still “YMCMB”.

During a radio appearance on Fox Sports Radio show Up On Game, Wayne announced that a new compilation album from the Young Money collective is on the way.

“We about to put the compilation together with all the artists together on one album,” Wayne said. “That sets up everything for everybody so they could start coming out with their solo projects as well.”

If you’re feeling a certain sense of excitement, then you’re not the only one. Lil Wayne made his name as a great eye for talent and music when he started his Young Money imprint label back in 2004. Right before going to jail in 2010, Wayne introduced the world to the Young Money team with their first compilation album; We Are Young Money.

The project featured some of today’s rap stars, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Tyga. They put out another entry in 2014 with their Rise of an Empire album. Both compilation albums gave us memorable bangers such as “BedRock,” “Roger That,” “Senile”, and “Trophies”.

So a new Young Money album, after several years removed from the last one, will be welcomed return to form.

In the interview, Weezy also talked about his latest single, “Ain’t Got Time,” featuring singer Fousheé. He spoke very highly of the young vocalist and her musical abilities.

“That girl is super talented, bro,” Wayne said of Fousheé. “Super talented. She’ll come in the studio, pick up a guitar, don’t know how to read no music, just plays by ear and kills it, man.”
