Tyler the Creator is pushing the musical envelope thanks to the latest Kendrick Lamar verse. Hip hop’s “weird boy” is proving why he’s still in the game after 15 years. Following the summer release of his new album Call Me If You Get Lost, he talks about early rap influences and why he called Kendrick every two days following his verse on Baby Keem’s “Family Ties.”
Tyler the Creator’s Method to the Madness
Tyler graced the cover of the Fall 2021 issue of XXL magazine titled, “The Wild and Wonderful World of Tyler.” In a sit down with XXL, Tyler shared how Kendrick’s melodic switch up in the verse has “ruined” him in a good way.
“You know why it ruined me? Because it’s someone at that level still gunning,” Tyler said.
This isn’t the first time he has noted Kendrick as an influence. In 2019, he stated that Kendrick made him more comfortable singing on his album Igor. Given Kendrick’s lack of social media presence in addition to going months without a phone, reaching the rapper will definitely be a task. Kudos to him for trying.
A true artist at work
An artists’ work is never done and Tyler is proving just that. With this in mind, he is in search of new inspiration daily to aid in releasing the best music possible. He has recently taken to Twitter to engage his fans. Most of the questions centered his new album ‘Call Me If You Get Lost’, Tyler has been very vocal about his influences in hip hop throughout his career. Early on he credits Jay-Z as an early influence. He shared that the hip hop “mogul” inspired him to be one of the few who’s really listening and learned “how to kind of run business since I was 17. “
Tyler listeners question his switch up. Tyler, unbothered, says, “it’s interesting people are like he became everything he would talk shit about, like bro when I did I had like 40 chains on what are they talking about.”
In spite of the claims, Tyler keeps it interesting. With attention to his fashion choices, outrageous verses, or controversial videos, he’s soaking up all hip hop has to offer.
